What I have in mind would be a 16+ knife similar to an Arkansas Toothpick. It's almost imposible to find one that is both affordable and high quality.
... yes, it has been done. the YCS, the various Foxy Folly generations, the Sarge, Munk Cleaver, a falcata, and etc.
all these successful models however were done on a multiple order scale however.
I suspect that there might be enough interest in a Arkansas Toothpick on
a multiple order basis to make it a feasible project, for the reasons you give. My suggestions here are bases on watching the evolution of past successful projects like the Cherokee Rose.
To guage the interest, you might try starting a thread titled something like "Interested in an HI Arkansas Toothpick?" You should also furnish the specs on what defines an Arkansas Toothpick to YOU. Be aware that what people may be interested in may be a little to a lot different than what you have in mind, ie many folks many want one, only not quite that long.
Typically, it seems to take at least 12-20 people willing to commit to buy before things go any further. At that point, you should run it by Yangdu,
to see if HI is interested. If so, providing a model for the Kamis to look at seems to be the best way to go. The better the model, the better the result. There have been too many odd prototypes and total disappointments when only drawings were supplied.
At this point there will be one or more rounds of the following:
The Kamis will make one or more prototypes, based on their understanding of what is wanted. They will then send them to Yangdu. She will critique them. If they seem close enough, she will have someone else, usually
the person "heading" the project try it out, to see if is really what is
wanted. Any suggestions, criticisms, etc. will be sent back to the kamis.
When everyone is satisfied, a run will be made of the number of knives committed to. If there is remaining interest, more runs may be made.
If the interest persists on an ongoing basis, it may become part of the
standard HI lineup.
Good Luck,
John
