Custom Knives Depicted in Publications – Significance?

Thanks Michael - I look forward to reading that article. Which knives of yours should I look for?

Roger

I just read the article in Blade, very nice!

Thanks Mr. Gill, for the inclusion :)

Thanks Michael, for your support :)

I hope my copy will come in soon....damn the 4 to 6 weeks drag because of the snail mail.

As for published knives I had a few in David Darom's books and a surprise cover on Blade and I can tell you it feels good to know that one of your knives is good enough to get published.

Yesterday, Chuck Ward and I were discussing the knife photos in the most recent Blade Magazine article “Hottest Knives of the Hottest ABS Smiths” (very good article, by the way) and we starting pondering the question of what’s the significance if any of having your knives depicted in major knife publications?

Chuck submits customer’s knife photos to five major knife publications, as do some other knife photographers, for possible inclusion into future articles. He was wondering if in fact collectors valued this service?

So considering the responses, the answer to the question that initialed this thread is not only do collectors but ALL involved in the knife industry appreciate, benefit and value the considerable time and effort that photographers such as Chuck, Coop and Eric put into sending all photos to the major knife publications.

Just got my Blade today.
I own 2 of the knives featured in the article (Hanson & Knight)

I have a smile on my face knowing I picked "hot" makers.
Seeing knives in Blade and having them be MS test pieces - bigger smile and a little teeth showing.

I don’t own two but the John White piece is mine.

See it in two different mags, knowing it is an award winner, and a MS test piece has more teeth showing.

Well, looks as though this Hancock Bowie sold almost instantly off a dealer site after being depicted in the latest addition of Blade (pg.95) article "How Aftermarket Value Affects Primary Price". ;)

Im sure its rewarding to everybody who has a knife appear in a periodical or book. Aside from the knives being pretty and satisfying for the owner to look at, what else is the point of collecting? I cant figure out what I like about collecting but I know it also involves pride of ownership.. and what better way to have this then seeing your knife published. Sometimes collecting seems very materialistic and pointless but I love it anyway and when I saw a knife I own in a Blade magazine, that made it worthwhile. I also had that particular photo taken and the publishing of it made me feel like I had contributed to the knife community which was rewarding (even though I didnt make the knife).

Got my copy of "Knives 2008" today and many of our forumite makers should be proud as you are well represented.

There's also several very good articles in the front. One in fact "Practicing Steel Manipulation" that goes right along with our Damascus-Fuctional Blade or Art thread.

And others "Dissecting the Handmade Knife" and "Archaic, Bizarre and Common Knife Superstitions".
