To me, they're a lot more unique interesting than factory knives. Not only the knives, but the interpersonal relationships with makers and other collectors that go along with them. Of course, buying and collecting customs takes a little more savvy, and you have to do your homework and cover yourself when dealing with someone you don't know, just like you would in any type of dealing. These aspects also make the whole "custom knife thing" more interesting and fun as far as I'm concerned. Downsides? It depends who you are. For me, there aren't any.
