I'm just getting the big "X" so I don't know if Himalayan Imports- http://www.himalayan-imports.com/ already offers something close to what you're looking for.

Bill Seigle is an excellent maker here on the Forums who from time to time offers a nice Khukuri in modern materials.

any feedback or thoughts on the design?

and is this the ideal subforum to post this request?

You may want to give the price range you're considering. It's a larger piece with a fairly sophisticated handle design, so some makers are probably wondering what you are expecting to pay before chiming in.

great point kevin.

this blade will see tons of use, so the final product wont need to be a piece of art as it will follow me around the world on my belt

priced up to $500 and that figure is pretty flexible

skill level of the knifemaker is not an issue either

I would like to take this comission , you pay when you see the finished product, please contact me.. new to the forums , old in the knife forging.

I offer you some caution.
On a knife of that size and complexity of handle and geometry of blade, when considering proper forging and hardening, I suggest that the "skill level of the knifemaker" will be the single most important factor.

Only a suggestion the sub hilt part might get in the way on a knife style primarily designed for chopping could become very uncomfortable with heavy use..

Only a thought

I agree Joe.
This could possibly be remedied if the handle was precision fit to the owners hand. But still....

Hey guys, I really appreciate the feedback on the design.

Karl thank you for your thoughts. I may have been a bit hasty when I added that note. Naively, I assumed whoever felt they could not satisfactorily craft this knife would refrain from taking on this project.

I have since nixed the index bolster after seeing what Joe had to say and hearing about the difficulty in fabricating and fastening the small bolster to a full tang knife.

I will post an edit of the design.

Krexx, I would love to discuss this possibility with you if I knew of some way to contact you.

I saw one that Jim Rodebaugh made, but that would be above $500.
I agree, lose the sub hilt.
I also agree, get someone experienced on this for those curves and diferential hardening

This is the first round of edits after a bit of discussion.

I was thinking of having the handle made in stabilized spalted maple. It is absolutely gorgeous wood. I think it more practical to be made of a synthetic.

As for blade steel, I still haven't been able to settle. I'm not even sure what alloy would be most ideal for this glorified camp knife.

Anyone have any thoughts on ergonomics, aesthetics or materials to use?
