Custom Leek scales?

Does anyone make custom scales for the Leek? After seeing the PGT I can't stop thinking about how nice that polished G10 looks. I have a 1660 coming from Dave, a Xmas gift for my girlfriend. And she was just commenting on how she liked the scale on an HK BM we saw yesterday, it was also polished G10.

So, what's the verdict, any custom Leeks in her future?

You could always get the current G-10 Leek and sand it down and polish yourself.

Is sanding down a G10 going to give me the same look as a PGT though? I also like the idea of the frame lock and thinness of adding a scale to the 1660. That G10 Leek is thick! As for dealing with speedsafe, why is it so hard removing the small amount of material necessary?

I've sanded down the course G-10 scales to the same basic looked as the factory polished G-10. Others have as well.

Maybe someone would like to show there's off? I may give it a go after the holidays. Maybe I could work on the blade too, it'd probably look pretty nice polished.

Good mask and water.........don't breath. :)

svrider3 polished the scales on his R.A.M. and they had the same look as the old Random Tasks.

Yup. I tried to have TuffThumbz do a scale for my leek but he said he doesn't do Kershaws with speedsafe...
I really don't know why because its not complicated at all. It's actually pretty easy.
I think its more of a liability thing more then anything as to why people don't make them... I'm sure he won't make scales for auto knives either

Not a Leek but you can get the same results:

While it may sound easy, unless you have a precision mill...i can tell you first hand its not. you need to get exactly 0.060" deep, and follow a specific curve to allow it to work. This causes 3 problems.

1. you cannot pattern the top because most scales are only 0.100 or 0.125" thick. This also weakens a portion of the scale if you go too deep.
2. You have to get extremely close to the edges. Without a precision mill you will end up with a chip, crack, or missing portion of an edge.
3. Leeks & cryos have a 2 depth milling pattern to allow for the cover plate to protect the torsion bar. One layer is one thing, but 2 is too much.

I have been able to do speedsafe on some knives, but not a leek yet. I have seen pics of a thin overlay scale on a leek, but thats about it. If someone can do one I'd love to see what their milling looks like...

Sound difficult and very frustrating.
Thanks for the explanation!

Is anyone making scales with white carbon fiber? I'm thinking a thin overlay would be nice for the 1660. I'm also practicing sanding down the scales on an old CS Recon 1 I have. It really isn't difficult, as has been mentioned. I'll most likely pick up a G10 Leek and give it a go. But in the mean time, white carbon? Anybody?

Dont think I've seen any white CF...have access to silver twill & blue twill, which is a glass fiber weave.

Here's a leek scale that TuffThumbz did:

Someone has this up for sale in the knife exchange at the moment.
