Custom Letter Openers

I really had NO intention of being disrespectful and want to apologize, as I obviously came off that way. I thought throwing out a pic of the top of the heap would kinda cap off the thread.

I actually love letter openers and collect them!

Again, sorry if my choice of wording was poor as I had no intention to do anything other than to be funny - which I obviously wasn't!

Best,

Bob Betzner

Thanks for that.....it seems that most everyone that has posted here (except for a few) have been VERY critical....I mean these are not designed to be the top of the line letter opener. They are designed to be affordable users.

If you didn't want critique, you shouldn't have posted, you have been around here for a while and should know better.

You also should have known that the handle materials were not going to be recieved warmly.

You could have posted in The Gallery, and probably would have gotten lots of attboys and kudos.

Is this is tough crowd? Yes.

Am I personally a tough and generally "no bs" Forumite in critique? Yes.

This is where some of the best and many of the "want to be the best" come for unvarnished feedback....and they often get it.

Those that just want to be told how great they are should state as such and wait for the fanboys to come out of the woodwork.

Happy Thanksgiving, and Best Regards,

Not looking for an atta boy or pat on the back but I am looking for CONSTRUCTIVE criticism. Constructive is the key word. I appreciate all the opinions but there is a fine line between letting someone know what they could do to improve and just being as a!@.

I have tough skin but when I am attacked I have to defend. Both positive and negative comments were bound to happen....I was ready for that because I have been here for a while. I don't mind someone not pulling punches "His choice of handle material is atrocious, imo.".....I have no problem with that...it is your honest opinion and I am ok with that.

I can see that this is not going anywhere.....I will delete the pics and edit the OP to be deleted.

If you do that, there will be a long thread with no context as to what started it. Why not leave it, and let it run the course that it will. There has been some constructive criticism offered here, take it and move forward with it.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

hey man, your thread attracted a photo of a Warenski!
I'd say you're doing pretty good.

STeven,

I would like to extend an invitation for you to be my fanboy.

I can see that this is not going anywhere.....I will delete the pics and edit the OP to be deleted.

Don't do that, man.

It is what it is. I found your thread valuable.

I know, right! ;)

Its all good......I have thick skin.

I was really serious about not meaning any offense to you, and my apology was sincerely truthful.

BUT you are in a VERY tough crowd here and must accept the crowd for what it is - and it's full of honest people who mean no offense but are direct and to the point - STeven being the finest example of the species homo sapiens toughunensis.

Best,

Bob

Hey I like your openers. Some of the handle material I would choose differently but some are very nice too. I like the makers signature, best to practice here with it, did not note any problems with its marking. On one handle it appeared to be thickish and maybe square. I like thinner but not thin handles, thin liners. Might suggest a triangleish handle, thicker at the bottom with more rounded sides.

I would suggest going to a knife show and both see and handle the different handle configurations. For me these letter openers show good skills in their construction. Keep at'em and keep learning new things to do to them.

J,

You are handling this nicely. And you are learning some of the difficulties/complications that often come up. (I understood Bob Betzner's intention completely as innocuous, and your misinterpretation wasn't a stretch. Damn keyboards!)

Tell your dad I like his work. He's going to do well. Here is one of my faves that *I* made years ago....

Hey it's not a Warenski, but I tried.... ;)

Holy Crap! I do honestly believe that particular letter opener is worth more than my truck! Well, I might have to toss in a few bucks and a six pack to even it out. :p

Now I cant quit drooling for some reason...... :o

Since it looks like this thread may be at an end, I'll cap it off by saying "this is what a custom letter opener looks like".

Best,

Bob Betzner

You tell your daddy to keep making what he wants to and putting what handle materials on them that suits his fancy.

Personally, I am intrigued by that old retro-look celluloid.

This particular sub forum can really be brutal from time-to-time, however, many of the gang that respond to posts are true collectors. Because of this, they may seem to come across as a little harsh at times, especially if the OP does not post something on the higher end of the scale.

I look here many times daily, however, I don't post here often simply because I don't have anything on the higher end of the scale to offer.

Hang in there and share some more of your dad's work.

'Custom' and purchased blade blank or kit knife do not equivocate for me. My original post tested the waters, so to speak. You were honest about your dad's methods and that's commendable. Unfortunately, many are not. Those are the ones I have an issue with. I have to agree with Coop about the marking, though, as a misrepresentation may come about down the line.
As for encouragement, I encourage your dad to continue doing what he enjoys.

Following the line of reasoning presented thus far in this thread. A person who buys a barrel in his chosen caliber along with an action and trigger assembly and inlets and carves a stock to his liking, then fits and assembles all the parts, has built a kit gun. What would constitute a custom rifle ?

:thumbup::cool:
I too like that celluloid material. I despise 'dymondwood' or whatever that crap is called. I'm sure it's plenty durable but that doesn't mean I can't hate the stuff:p

Isn't there a "more-or-less custom rifle" forum??
