I am the proud owner of 18, 20, and 25 inch Sirus, all by Tirtha.

The 18" feels weightless in the hand, fast knife and when I swing hard it will make a loud "whoosh" through the air.

The 20" seems like the perfect length and still feels fast in the hand though I can't quite get it to sing like the 18". Feels just a tad front heavy.

The 25" is a monster with a 7/16" spine. According to the DOTD ad I bought it from it weighs 44oz. A bit awkward and once a swing is started there is no stopping it.

The Sirus are my favorite Khukuris; they just feel great in the hands and seem like formidable weapons. I started thinking about what would make one "perfect" and thought about Chiruwa style handles bringing some weight to the rear and increasing balance as I had some heavy Khukuris with this style handle that felt lighter than they were due to the excellent balance.

With this in mind, I ordered 3 more Sirus to be custom made with a Chiruwa style handle in the same lengths above. I chose Satisal wood for the handle both for the feel and the look. Fast forward 3 months, and here they are on my doorstep. All three are made by Rajkumar, which is awesome. I recently acquired two of his knives (my frist from him) and was amazed at the quality of his work and these are no different. SHARP out of the box, even grinds, small and clean cho, short ricasso, overall excellent fit and finish. In short, I believe he is the best. I did not ask for thinner spines (even though later on I wished I had) but here Rajkumar did it right for a Sirupati. All 3 are in the 1/4 to 5/16 range and even with the extra weight in the handle feel lighter than their off the shelf counterparts. I got what I wanted without even asking. Add to this the extra weight in the handle and the difference is enormous, especially when comparing the two 25s. I can make all three of these make a loud "whoooosh" sound when swinging them, they are FAST. The 20" feels perfect, like an extension of the hand an the 18" feels like it isn't even there. I also really liked Rajkumar's scrollwork on the "Sword of Shiva" as well. Oddly the 20" came with a horn handle instead of Satisal, but call that a pleasant suprise also. It looks and feels great. All in all, these exceeded my expectations in every way. HIs regular offerings are awesome but the ability to order exactly what you want and try new things is great.

This is where the biggest difference was. My custom Sirupati is a long but lively blade and the 44oz one is a bit awkward.

This custom 20" Sirupati is so long, balanced and fast..........I couldn't imagine a better knife for a sidearm. My new favorite.

Damn very nice. Makes me that more happy and excited to get the 20" from today's deal

About what kind of weight are the ones you got

I wish I could tell you but I don't have a scale that would work with a Khukuri. The next time I go out I am going to look for one because I am interested as well.

That is why I am happy we have super accurate postal scales at work I can use any time

Yeah, mine are either super small (I use them for handloading) or so large they only read in lbs.

You will love that 20". I was just messing around with it again in an empty room and it is perfectly balanced a joy to swing.

Wow, beautiful photos! Thank you so much for posting those. Your review is so good, I wonder if maybe your "custom" sirupatis should become a standard product? Why did you choose these instead of a kumar kobra? I'm sure they would work great as a light-duty machete. They're long enough to be like those ancient Spanish swords that look like kukris - I forgot what they're called. Being lighter, they're not for war, but they might be useful for pesky tall grasses.

For a weird reason i feel the 18" will have a better feel on hand.
I'm judging from the tapering on the handle itself; the 25" comes in 2nd and 20" at last.
The drop on the 18" followed a nice curve on the spine and the tip is more acute.

I would pick 18" as my weapon of defense.

Good job on asking for a thinner spine. I love my Kumar Kobra for this reason.

On your question, Kookery- the Gurkhas love their Sirus and most are seen rocking a stick tang version. I've grown to like a light and slender profile as what i fancied back then (broad belly with a good drop) for fluidity and liveliness.

I think this thread is going to useful for your question:

Now if i may ask my dear friend Mohd about his special Bura-made Siru with Chitlangi pommel:

I also like the 18" with the chitlangi Handle.. I've found for my purposes lighter is better. I have a chitlangi that I use mostly for campwork, and clearing brush. With my other's I do worry sometimes about the standard handles when it gets wet. Either from sweat, or the elements. A bigger butt:) handle on a sirupati would ease my mind a bit. I think thats why I reach for the chit a bit more than my WWII.. It also depends on what I'm doing, heavier brush and chopping I save for the WWII, or one of the UVG's I have. My next one is going to be a custom Sirupati, 17 to 18", and lightweight if possible, around 14 to 16oz's with a Chitlangi Rosewood handle.. That would be the perfect Kukuri for my purposes..

Good advice.
18" is plenty long. If you need more than that go for the chainsaw or shotgun.
I have a Hanshe, 18" 19oz, stick tang.

and I like it alot.
A fast, fast knife. Handy and light enough to carry it even if you don't encounter the need to cut briars.

Unless you are doing some *serious* chopping, a thin fast walk around knife will solve most of life's obstacles. Which are likely to be only 1"-2" diameter. Bigger problems than that, just go around. or go back and get the chainsaw or shotgun. :)

But i also like my 26 oz BAS and GRS choppers too. They chop up branches so easily. And a kukri is a lot handier than a hatchet. IMHO

Those are some great looking Khukris you have there. The Sirupati is one of my favorite Khukri styles, the other being the WWII. My 15" Sirupati weights 16.2oz according to my postage scale. It's a traditional tang with a horn handle. Back in College, I carried a different 15" horn handled Sirupati on backpacking trips. Today I tend to carry my 20" do to the extra reach, but my current 15" is still a great blade! I say go for a custom 15"!

Now that's a proper fighting Kukri! :thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:
Per chance what is the weight of it Jay?

Great post and pix, thank you for sharing

My 20" 24oz satisal handled one just came in today and I love it and can already say that it will be one of my favorites. Would say it is the most comfortable/best fitting handle for my hands of all the 8 I own. Balance point is almost exactly in the center of it as can be seen in the pic below where it is balancing on the edge of a piece of wood

Nice and I agree. I know some prefer the "weight forward" balance for the heavy choppers (as do I) but for a "fighting knife" like the Sirupati I prefer the neutral balance.

Rajkumar definitely finishes his handles perfectly with absolutely no sharp edges. Your handle looks very slim with a small ring just like all 3 of mine.

Agreed it is a very nicely done handle and is very slim. Normally I prefer the handle style from my m43 and BDCs rather than the ones with a ring but this one is beter than them by far
