Looking at the recent posts it seems my problem was not an uncommon one. I recently inquired about having a couple of custom SAKs made and over the course of a week the craftsman only managed to respond to a single email stating that he is in fact still offering his services. I don't mind waiting, even a number of months, for the knives themselves, but if I can't rely on the maker to communicate with me to simply set up an order it makes me feel like either my business isn't important or there's a sever lack of organization. Either way it doesn't make me want to do any further business. I gave up on placing an order. Hopefully others will have better luck.

Hi sorry I do get behind on the quoting process, I get 100s of emails a week, so I only sit down a couple days of the week to go through them and send out quotes. Its the most efficient way Ive found to handle the process and still maximize productivity for customs that have been ordered.

Once a job is quoted and in my system I respond to follow up emails the same day, and I also do not take payment for work until I have completed it and provided high res pictures for you to okay. This process has been how I have worked for 3 years now with no complaints, so I am comfortable with this system.

Cheers

Sudden success in a business does that, and when you deal with more tire kickers than actual clients time is of the essence. I'd bet that any lack of communication was not intentional. Painting certain situations with broad strokes without knowing all the facts does not always enlighten and can turn around and bite us in the kiester. Starting any business from scratch is often a difficult endeavor and not everything in the decision making process is clearly outlined.

Curious... How does one unintentionally not respond to something like an email?

Edit: I just noticed the feedback section. If the craftsman would prefer it, I have no problem with moving my earlier comment there.

I have no Pokemon in this battle, nor am I defending anyone, but as I said overlooking an email or 3 can be done when there are a lot of things going consistently. I don't know if you've ever been so busy that you your plate is completely full and things keep piling up. It happens to some of us and when it does things can be overlooked. I've not met too many business people that say, "You know, I have more than enough money now. I think I will string everyone along until I have my reputation smeared to an irreparable level." What I am saying is that it can be a plausible explanation for overlooking things. I do know that some craftsmen pick and choose whom they do business with, and others don't. I can relate to that as I've met people that no matter what you do they cannot be made happy. You can literally give them the work for free including materials, and they still complain that it was not good/fast/precise/clean enough. I did not see the "intentionally" portion, but if that is the case there must have been a reason to provoke such a reaction.

You mean the one where he describes INTENTIONALLY ignoring emails for all but a "couple"(one in my experience) days a week? Yes.

He's not taking any money and then stringing people along so I'm not seeing the problem. He's doing business the way he wants. Finding someone else to do the work sounds like your best bet.

Syph007 and I are in the middle of a custom SAK project and let me say that he has been an ABSOLUTE PLEASURE to deal with.

Great communication in a timeous manner. Super obliging and very helpful.

Custom knifemakers and providers are one man shows and mostly do this for the passion and hobby. Sometimes life and the real job comes first.

In this instance no deal was struck and no money changed hands.

I think that opening a GBU thread and dissing a mans reputation just because you feel that you didn't get an e-mail reply fast enough, is a despicable thing to do.

I didn't start a GBU thread, the MODS did. I left a bit of feedback on page 11 of his ad.
I didn't smear anyone's reputation. I merely stated the truth about my encounter with him. If he doesn't like that truth then he needs to change it. I don't see the problem in letting other people know that this individual was difficult to communicate with via email and letting the craftsman know that due to this experience he missed out on my business. Afterward I just found the MOD's replies funny.

Sylph007,
I should however apologize for derailing your ad thread with the MODS. For that, I'm sorry.

Why should HE change anything if HE is happy with how HE is running HIS business?

I thought I'd made it pretty clear. I'll try to dumb it down for you though. If HE isn't happy with me telling folks that HE, over the course of a week, only managed to send me a single email confirming that HE is still working and that HIS policy of only bothering with emails once a week cost HIM my business the HE needs to change HIS process.

If he's ok with the occasional client loss because of the slow quote process then there's no need to change anything.

I'm not even upset about it. I just wanted to address the issue so others would know to expect slow response times when dealing with him.

That said, those TI SAKs he makes are gorgeous. If someone wants to sell I'm in the market. Lol

Well gee thanks for bringing it down to a level I could understand.

If anything, this has served as warning to other service providers on who to avoid in the future. Considering the service provider in question did nothing wrong, I don't see the need to continue this whine fest. Closed.
