Howdy folks, I live kinda rural and not many folks to talk to. I see the sheaths now with a d ring attaching a belt loop to the sheath. What is the purpose of these? Doesn't it make the knife flop around? I almost always carry a fixed blade knife usually tucking the sheath into my back pocket when I head to town. Is that what it's for? Excuse the curiosity. Thanks, mp

That is exactly what he is talking about.

To the OP, a dangler is used to lower the knife sheath for style, comfort or function. Here are a few examples as to why someone would want a dangler:

1) Someone has a backpack with a waist belt and the knife would be in the way without a dangler.

2) The sheath and knife may ride high and be uncomfortable to carry. A dangler could solve that problem in short order. And, for a lot less money than a custom sheath too.

3) You drive a truck but the knife handle is a hassle and gets in the way of the seat belt or will tear up the upholstery. Adding a dangler could solve both of those issues.

Hope this was helpful.

Well, that was real helpful, thanks! All those situations make perfect sense and I never thought of them. One more question though. Is a dangler an add on for an original sheath?

You can get (generic) dangler attachments that fit existing sheaths, or some makers offer them as an option on commissioned sheaths

Thanks, I should have looked around. I went to the auction site and saw them. I'll just make one to try out. thanks again folks.
