Custom Shop 112

It's funny I was just a minute ago building both a 110 and a 112 lol! The 110 offered many blade choices including drop points in both S30V and 420 mirror polished versions with or without serrations and the 112 had 3..total. I have a couple of CS 112's both from the brief window around 2009 and a later version. Handle choices are ok tho.
I will not order a Custom Shop 112 till the day Buck offers a drop point and the day they do I will order one in Nickel silver, finger grooves no rivets in Black Palm wood..Just look at the blade choices you can get on a 110 and compared to the 112. I mean ya can't even get serrations lol!

And why would you want to ruin the blade with serrations? :)

O.B.

I bought two Buck Custom Shop 112s, one in oak/S30V for me, another in walnut/S30V for my BIL. Beautiful and functional.

I don't care for serrations on a smaller folder to use but did get them on my 2 CS 112's from the 2009 window just because up to that time I had not seen them on any 112..and I really DO like odd 112's. I used a 450 for a few years that had serrations and it was a pain to sharpen but ok for use. A correction on 110 CS options..You cannot order a DP mirror polished. I have wondered about the lack of a DP for the 112 for many years now. It just seems so easy to drop a box of DP blades at the Custom shop for folks like me who really, really want one AND are willing to pay well for the privilege..Even if expensive. For example I would absolutely pay a upcharge of $50.00 for a S35VN DP if Buck offered me the option. I do like mirror polished blades too and would be perfectly willing to pay $25.00 for a MP DP in 420..As part of Bucks celebration of the 50th I'm sure we will see some very cool 112 LE's and possibly some changes in the Custom shop for the 112. I did ask CJ twice to drop a box of DP 112 blades off at the CS at the Blade Show this year..

At this juncture I'd like to admit that I have never acquired a Custom Shop Buck.

I know! It's blasphemy and sacrilege combined!

My only custom shop knife is a 112 s30v, brass and walnut. It’s really nice and I use it occasionally. I’ve been wondering if they will ever have s35vn as an option for 110 and 112. With all the pro models in production I would think that would be reasonable.

My best guess is Buck limits 112 DP's and premium steels to special factory orders so the retailer can get a measure of exclusively..and it works! Cost to Buck to install a premium steel upgrade or different blade profiles is not THAT much more than a standard 420 clip and I imagine the labor to mirror polish a blade is not that high either. All in all marketing rules what Buck makes and the 112 market is smaller than the 110 and likely many models of fixed blades. A 112 is a great knife and I absolutely love collecting the odd ones but for some reason really fancy 112's (read high price) dosen't fly out the door like the 110. Remember the D2 Lil'jack?

Buck offered this one on their website.

I ordered this one last January to commemorate my switch to a BCCI life member. I was planning on ordering another custom shop 112 in January. I am sitting on the fence between water buffalo scales and that black palm wood.

I decided on Black Palm wood when Buck adds a drop point simply because I don't have a 112 with it..If I'm going to pay full price for a factory Custom I definitely want something odd and rare that fits my collection perfectly. Plus I love the look of dark scales with nickel silver frames especially with a mirror polished blade. My favorite profile DP is similar to the 532 but that's only available from Leroy if he feels like making one. Next is the high radius grind like the 2013 Boone and Crockett LE. One thing I have never ever seen is a drop point Damascus 112..That would be the ultimate rare blade! I think Buck should seriously consider a 112 Damascus blade LE 112 as part of the 50th anniversary celebration plans. If a Dammisteel 112 was released..even over $500.00..I would sell lesser rare 112's to get one if I had too. Folks LIKE the 112 both to use and just admire. More people collect them too. Back in 2007 when I first started collecting 112's I felt like I was the only serious single model collector and for sure was the only one to display as a single model. Things are different now in 2021. The 110 is the absolute king of Buck folders and that will never change but as the years go by I see more folks actually using and posting pics of the 112 plus rising prices on Ebay for early knives especially fancy LE's. In the early days I was a lonely fanboy..but I got lots of friends now.

Was it your collection at Blade 21 in Atlanta that I saw and was blown away?

Yes Don I displayed this year..Because I have chased the odd ones for so long my 112 collection is pretty unique. But for years I passed on a lot of important 112's simply because they were not rare.. Looking back now I wish I had not been so 'focused' on odd ones and dug deeper for the more expensive 112's when I had a opportunity. It took me years to really understand some knives might only be offered/seen once in a lifetime if you were lucky..and looking.

OKayyyyy. I bit.

My normal belt knife is a CS 112FG, brass, oak, pins, 420HC, & engraved. I bought it for my 20th work anniversary as I really wanted it and no one took the hint. ;) I really enjoy it, every day.

So, after thinking about it for years, and the enabling in this thread, I ordered a 112FG, nickle silver, elk, pins, polished 420HC, with the classic BUCK black leather sheath.

Should arrive around Thanksgiving, so maybe this will be to celebrate my blessings.

A buncha enablers here! ;)
