Custom Shop..... disappointment

You're probably right. Benchmade was my first high end knife and I wish them the best. When I pay a premium for a knife that comes from the factory "made to order" with issues and I'm told I have to fill out a warranty request form to get my brand new knife made how it should, I'm out.

After I fixed the knife I put it up for sale because I don't want to carry a brand that doesn't take care of me. I was already out the door as I've found other things I like but the Grip/M4 combo pushed me over the edge. The QC and customer service brought me back to reality.
How else would you expect them to take care of it?

Well unfortunately that's how it would get taken care of. Shit happens.

Gotta have to get over that, now and again a bad egg gets out of the nest.

Knife blade wasn't centered was the issue?

Just reread your post that you don't want to carry a knife if the brand doesn't take care of you. Did BM decline to take carry of it?

How did you fix it? Adjust the pivot?

I shouldn't have had to fill out a warranty form for one. This wasn't a warranty issue. The brand new made to order knife was defective on delivery.

Agreed 100%. I was going to order one but now after seeing both the issues in the thread I think I'll pass.

Did you end up selling yours?

Reporting back on my custom Barrage; I'm quite happy with it!

Blade is perfectly centered to the eye, grind is even on both sides and consistent the whole way down the blade. Lock-up is rock solid in all directions. It definitely needs some breaking in as the safety is still stiff and does have a bit of axis lock stick, but I'm sure that'll work out over time as they do.

Zero issues with this knife, I'm happy to report.

That's pretty good CS right there, let us know what you do.

You'd think a knife from the custom shop would undergo further inspection/quality control than a standard production but sounds like that's not the case. I was going to order a Grip with M4 but now second guessing that decision. I've been lucky with all my other factory Benchmades and none have had any type of issues.

I was seriously considering an M4 Grip as a new work knife, but it looks like I’ll be taking my money elsewhere. That totally sucks, BMCGear BMCGear

About a month ago I ordered a blacked out M4 grip. It took forever to get here but showed up in great shape.

I got a custom Barrage a month ago and everything is perfect about it and breaking in well
received it quicker than i expected also

I did. As I look back on the experience there was frustration when I got the shipping notification and then it didn't actually ship for two days. Upon arrival the knife had a couple of issues that I felt it shouldn't for a "custom made" knife that was put together after I ordered it but the customer service rep got really defensive really fast and that just pissed me off. The company messed up an order - own it.

With that being said, I did order a custom Crooked River a while back and that knife was great.

The one cautionary tale I will give you is this: know that you want the knife you order. When you go to sale it you will take a bath on it for the upcharge you pay for a "custom" knife. I ended up not liking a couple of the options on the Crooked River and sold it for a HUGE loss.

I'll second this as well. My custom Mini-Barrage cost me $240 due to full-blown MSRP and factory options. I had it listed for sale for MONTHS on several different sales exchanges and slowly dropped the price before I finally sold it to co-worker for $140.

Haven't bought anything from the custom shop personally, but have had people buy a custom shop crooked river and a few griptilians than had the knives sent to me so could send them to different countries where they lived cause Benchmade wouldn't do it. I inspected them all on arrival, and they all were just fine. Except perhaps a touch of lock stick on the crooked river if REALLY wanted to be cynical and picky.

Honestly not much of a fan of the models offered in custom shop to order one. Mostly like black class benchmade. I very very very much appreciate this custom shop is available tho and hope to see more models added to it.

My one and only experience with BM custom shop was not great as well. I have an older co-worker that wanted to splurge on a knife and asked me about suggestions. He has a lot of clip/bowie style hunting fixed blades I sharpen for him so I immediately thought of the crooked river as his style, showed him a picture and he was hooked.
Opted for the mini CR with this build:
  • 20CV coated blade
  • Grey G10 and backspacer
  • Satin bolster with gold pivot collar
  • Satin liners
  • Black hardware
  • Black bugout style deep carry clip

Placed the order on a Thursday morning, shipped the next day, and arrived the following Monday (3 business days!)
The quality was great and build and shipping was super fast but they completely missed the build specifications. The knife was completely murdered out black with the exception of the gold pivot collar and a standard non deep carry BM clip.
Contacted BM to let them know about the problem. They did not offer to make it right asap but instead said that whenever we sent the knife in for servicing or sharpening that we could remind them and they would put the correct components in at that time.
My co-worker liked it just fine anyways and is happy but from the super fast "build" and shipping makes me think they had the blackouted one already or didn't pay attention and just sent out what they felt like. Not a huge deal but kind of ridiculous to miss 80% of the build specifications for a custom knife.
