Custom Shop handle options

I tried to post up some pics but maybe they are to big they aren't uploading ,it migh be my internet too as all we can get here is dial up.lol

ok here i am's again...
some of the sea shell scales that cost so so much, it is a health risk to cause any fine dust with them... it will cause fast acting breeathing issues if sanded fine...
many non plant organics such as bone and horn will cause algeric reactions in the lungs which can lead to breathing issues with SOME people so warnings are issued so ALL know it is possable...
i work with wood and walnut causes breathing and sines isses fast.
there many woods that will cause that. it is a concern in comerical production.

I like jigged bone a lot, and after stag it's the second most common scale material in my collection. But, given the choice between stag and bone I'll take the stag every time.

I was just at Buck's Custom Shop last night playing with the softwear and putting together a knife. I didn't pull the trigger, but the knife I would order would be a B42 blade, brass bolsters, brown leather sheath and stag scales.

I'm convinced everyone needs a Buck Custom.

Stag is very nice indeed, as long as it's matched well. I have some and really like it. Too often it's not though, so personally I've become reluctant to buy stag w/o seeing it first. Jigged bone is not a substitute on the same level but looks good and at least it's generally much more consistent.

Blue Sky, you're right, I love when the stag matches. Which is why I usually supply the stag to a maker when I order a custom. Still, it is the inconsistency of natural materials that adds interest to a piece.

If you're talking about jigged bone, that's pretty labor intensive. People need to be trained; tooling bought; workspace allotted. That bone you showed has been treated after jigging; whether staining or burning (or both), it's still more work. Lots of added steps to the manufacturing process. And jigging is a skill; not something you can trust to a MacDonalds reject.

Plus bone is hazardous material (while being worked); lots of headaches attached to HazMat in modern mfg plants... :(

So you can add cost-effectiveness to the supply/demand equation...

But I agree: I want one. ;)

I bet you can buy jigged bone scales by the ton from India . . so it wouldn't add a lick of extra work compared to other natural handle materials.

Good idea! I bet that Japanese steel is cheaper, too! And it could all be assembled by Mexicans, since they work cheaper! Hey, this could be the start of a GREAT IDEA!!!

I bet Chinese steel is cheaper yet!

Eeesh - I'm sorry - I just ordered my first buck from the Custom Shoppe and don't really know my way around the Buck forum. I didn't know you guys were so against the non-US handle materials on the custom 110's. That's weird that I haven't seen this kind of backlash against all the stag and waterbuffalo and orangewood, etc.

We're just funnin' ya, son! :D

What'd ya order on your custom 110???

BG42 (fingers are crossed that they have any left)

jigged waterbuffalo

no rivets

fingergrooves

silver bolsters

engraved script on blade - "H. P. J." and "10/06/06" to commemorate the recent birth of my son.

Black sheath

Should be a beaut - Can't wait!!

I resemble that remark. Actually, I never worked the golden arches. My first job in high school was at Taco Bell in East Oakland. Tough hood. But I enjoyed it.
Did it for a few months until I got offerred a job at the Navy Exchange. The manager at the Bell offerred me a chance to be Assistant Manager if I stayed. Often wonder if I made the right choice LOL.

Hey Brewthunda...the oversea gig is a touchy subject around here to some. I've had stuff edited by the moderators. All while I wonder every day when my job is gonna be transferred to India (no foolin').

Realistically, I am guessing that a lot of the scale material is from overseas. But I think the issue, at least for me, is the balance between keeping a company alive by outsourcing work in order to keep cost and price points low and jobs being sucked outta this country because of the cost of doing business. One of those "ya gotta burn the village to save the village" gigs.

And it goes deeper than country...Buck moved from California to Idaho to keep costs in control. One of the customers I support just moved from Silicon Valley to another state to reduce costs. People themselves move from California to Nevada to avoid income taxes, etc. Heck that's how these United States were born...people leaving Europe for the "New World" of opportunity. Blah blah blah.

Don't let the comments here get to ya. Gotta have tough skin and realize everyone here is very respectful and reasonably tolerant...but they won't tell ya it's raining if they're being pee'd on either. They tell it how it is from their perspective.
It's like a tough high school...you learn your way around and realize it's all good. Just a bunch of cool dudes acting like tough guys that are very smart when it comes to Bucks. Nonetheless, I still hide my lunch money in my socks.
