When ordering a Custom 110 or Alpha Hunter is there a reason not to get the s30v blade? With respect to the Alpha Hunter, is the incremental price difference between the s30v and cpm154? Finally, is there any functional differences between the blade finishes offered other that aesthetics/personal preference. thank you.

I cant speak of the Alpha as I never really explored it. The only reason not to get an S30V on the 110 IMHO, is you dont want a satin finish.

I think you mean, is it justified?

If so.......no, I think it's just that enough people have believed the hype about S30V that they can charge way more for it and get away with it.

The CM is just as good.

In fact, for what most people will need, the 420HC is just as good.

Wiskers, Yes there are differences (bare with me): the differences 'are not' just how much they cut, its also how much do you like to sharpen . Do you want a mirror polished blade (that cuts different) . I don't think they offer that option with a S30V blade . What will you use your knife for ? This may help you decide the steel and finish . Some of the handle materials offer you pluses as well . The rams horn and routed buffalo horn offer like finger grooves on the side adding a measure if you like them . It comes down to what appeals to you . We're just putting forth food for thought . DM

Please note that cpm154 is not available at the Buck Custom Shop; only 154CM for the Alpha. There is a big difference between 154CPM and 154CM (see link http://www.crucible.com/PDFs//DataSheets2010/Datasheet CPM 154 CMv12010.pdf).

Wish Buck would start using 154CPM again, but I understand Crucible Industries filed Chapter 11 and CPM154 is hard to find. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

Redd, I think your correct . Plus, Bass Pro has an agreement with Buck on that steel with
the model 110 . Perhaps the Vangard as well ? So, should Buck recieve some of that steel I think we'd see it in Bass Pro's offering first . DM
