custom slip joint marking poll

Do I want my custom slipjoints to have the blade steel marked on at least one tang?

  • Yes, I want it marked. Its better from a resale standpoint and I do not have to try and remember.

  • No, it does not make one bit of difference. My memory is good, even though the makers might not be.

As many of you may know, I have in the past started a few threads with a poll here in Traditional with the intent to improve my knives.

From a buyers standpoint of a custom slipjoint how important is it to have the blade steel marked on at least one of the tangs?

I want to thank in advance those that leave comments here or take part in the poll.

I think it's nice to have but not essential.

I like to have it marked. 100 years from now, after it changes hands many times. People will still know who made it and what it is made from.

I'd like it marked, but not for resell reasons. Just a reminder to me, the maker, and anyone who happens to come in contact with the knife.

I keep a pretty good memory of all my knives. Steel, handle material, the general time I purchased/received it.

I prefer as little marking on my knives as possible. So, I voted no.

Ken, I voted "I want it marked"
But If I like the knife,it does not matter to me,but I think for any custom knife it is a better feature, marked

It's obviously not a requirement I have, but I do prefer the marking if it is done nicely and neatly like I know you would do it;)

I prefer it to be marked but with conditions. I prefer it to be marked on the tang. Marks on the blade turn me off to the point of not wanting them.

Thanks for all the quick responses!

Yes, I would agree on the location. Normally I would mark the pile side master if I started to mark blade steels .

From the early votes it looks like I need to get started on having stencils made!

I agree with Blues. Just today I was listing a Ray Cover for sale and when I was writing up some specs for the sale thread I noticed the blade steel was not marked. This was kind of unusual since most of Ray's knives that I have seen are marked on the tang.
In the case of your knives it would not affect resell because when buyers see the Erickson mark they will buy'um anyway. :D

I like to mark the steel type and I think it's an indicator of doing that extra little bit to make a knife special. On the other hand, if the owner of the knife doesn't give a flip then I suppose it could be considered a waste of time. As a knife owner, I like to know what it's made out of and if it's stamped then there's no guessing.

Ray's knives that were not marked were 440V--He never had a stamp made up for that particular steel. OOPs with an exception of his smallest folder, which was not marked due to it's size--They are all ATS-34.

Now back to the regular programming;)

Funny you mention that. I saw your thread and along with conversations with buyers etc, is what prompted me to post this poll!

I personally think a nice clean tang marking is needed for maker provenance :D 100-150 yrs from now or when ever a custom is put out to an individual said individuals family et-al others hopefully can trace the lineage of the knife and steel used back to the maker and maybe even be able to date the knife (ie old records memory etc).:)

That being said, to each maker his own!!!:D

PS: I would have to agree w/ morrowj_98 in that I don't care for blade etches AND they do not LAST!!!

I like the tang(s) to be stamped myself. Maybe not as much in hand made knives like yours, but it's nice when shopping for production knives.

I really don't have a preference, but if a mark is present, I like it to be a stamp in the tang.

I'm fine either way, but none of my customs have the blade steel marked. Perhaps they should, since my memory is terrible.

I'm happy as long as it works well. Some of my main EDCs are 440A. Sure, I'm eventually gonna pick up a CV peanut or something, but for the time being, as long as it's a nice pattern, has functional blade shapes, and takes a sharp edge, I'm good.

Ken,

Great Poll. I agree with Kerry, as I would like to know/remember down the road what kind of blade material was used. I do like them marked. You know, I think that I would remember more if..I had one marked by Ken, Kerry, Tony, Reese, Jim, and the list keeps going! :D
