I'm looking for a custom folder with a 2.5-3" Wharncliffe blade. I really like the Kirby Lambert Whar but the blade is a little too long.
I'm currently leaning toward a Peter Carey Executive.
Does anyone have any other suggestions?
Price - less than $600.

how about some Mike Obenauf bandits? heard the action on them are very smooth, and at the price of $300.

The Bandit is great, but a little too much belly to the blade. Looking for a true Wharny.

EDC mainly. Simple stuff like opening letters and packages, cutting paper and the occasional whittling.

they are handy i made myself a folding box opener 3 inch blade but way over built (3/16 thick cpm154 blade)
i have shelved it for now and use a necker based on the same blade shape

A small Obenauf Model 4 with the coping-style blade would meet your length needs.

Are you only looking for a liner or frame lock in a modern style? Would you be open to a traditional pattern in a lockback or slipjoint?

buthcher_block, can i see the one you made?

Bailey Bradshaw's work looks great. Just looking for something a little more modern.

jujigatame, looking for a modern style liner or frame lock (preferably frame).

I agree with the Obenauf small model 4, the blade is just a hair under 3 inches. That should be substantially less than $600. At the high end of that price point you may be able to find a Terzuola TT-6 which 3&1/8. There's also Pat Nihiser's Jerico model at 3 inches. Here's a pic of some Model 4's.

the slimmer one im working on is 1/8 thick blade .070 Ti witha blade that is 2.75 long and has a more pointy tip on it

mmmotorcycle, I can't check that website from my work computer. I'll check when I get home.

schluterc, what is the very top model in that picture? It looks shorter that the second two. Where would be a good place to order that model?

That's nice, butcher_block. Please post pics of the slimmer one you are working on now when you are finished.

Those are all basically the same model 4's. The only exception is the bottom one which is more or less a "one of a kind". As I said, blade length is just a hair under three inches on all of them, it's the angle of the picture which makes the top look different. Try Neil at www.truenorthknives.com for a similiar knife.

Peter Carey's knives are EXCELLLENT!! I own a Firefly myself!! May I also suggest a Tom Mayo Wharny? Mike Obenauf IS an excellent choice.

i can comment on butch's folder.....they are really sweet and they have handles that are super comfortable......he is relativelt new to folders....i'd get them while u can......once everybody catches on....he'll have a loooong list for them......ryan

schluterc, I didn't think about the angle of the camera. :) I should take a closer look at Mike's work.

T.K.C., I'm strongly leaning toward a Carey. Is your Firefly a liner or frame lock?

jujigatame, once again, the firewall at work is stopping me from seeing the picture. I appreciate you keeping me in mind while you were browsing. I'll look at it when I get home.

ryan9977, butcher's handles DO look incredibly comfortable and ergonomic.

My Firefly is a liner lock. It IS a great little knife!! You WILL be VERY happy with one of Peter's knives!!
