Customer request for a personalized mark on the blade

I have a customer, a very close friend, who wants to purchase one of my knives with the intent of it being an heirloom to be passed down to his child, and so one. He wants his name marked on the blade too. I've explained to him that my mark will be on the front side of the blade, and have no problem with putting a custom mark with his name on the back side.

My problem is that I'd like to include something in his mark similar to "commissioned by . . ." or "made for . .. . " but none of these are the case. This is a completed knife and I think it would be a bit too impersonal to mark it "purchased by . . . .".

Can any of you offer suggestions for how to mark his name? I don't want to simply put his name on the blade, as that may imply that he had something to do with the making of the knife.

Thanks in advance for your ideas.

Duh.

"For" is great. I guess I had a mind block.

Since I started this thread and got a great answer within minutes, I guess I'm still open for other ideas.

Thanks,

Just because you mark it "Presented To" doesn't necessarily mean he didn't pay for it. :)

A while back one of the forum members who's user name starts with bladsm.. made a knife for me.
On one side of the blade it was lightly engraved "Handmade for Mark Farley"
Looked real good to me.

I put the customers name/initials on the show side and put my mark on the non-show side. Makes it about them but everybody still knows who made it. My $.02

I mark the customers name on many knives I sell. I put their name on one side and my kanji mark and name/city/state on the other. I doubt anyone would think the double line block "John Smith" is the maker when the other side is marked ## Stacy E. Apelt - Norfolk, VA

If the knife is a presentation piece or a special custom blade, I use "Handmade For" and the customer/recipient name.
