Customized Benchmade Contego 810BK

Even though my mule hide paws like the original scales and jimping, my eyes are really enjoying your mods. Beautiful work.

Spketch, I had a spyderco military (Ti frame model) -- it was a great knife. I ended up selling it because it sat around because of the tip down only configuration. I think the fit and finish on spydies have always been one of the best for production folders. In fact, that's what most of my production folders are -- spyderco. :)

The more I carry and use the Contego, the more I'm convinced that this will my favorite knife for EDC.

Thanks, Akcir. The mods make it a lot easier on my otherwise delicate hands.

I've had numerous (relatively) high end folders, Sebenzas, Strider, LE Benchmade, Customs, etc...

They've ALL sat on a shelf and/or been gotten rid of since I got the 810 a number of months ago. The combination of size/steel/lock and just plain badass-edness has kept it in my pocket nearly every single day. I still keep another knife in my other pocket (usually a slipjoint) for use in mixed company, or when I need to do something that requires a detail cut, or very acute edge, but for all intents and purposes the Contego has been the perfect companion.

Mine has been modified a few times so I will probably remove the blade then send it in and have them install a new one as a backup. Everything but the blade looks pretty new even though it's been used hard. Also, since the price of all Benchmades has dramatically increased I probably (sadly) won't be buying a whole new one.

Anyway, enjoy that sucker and use it hard. Also, check the modified Benchmade thread in the BM forum to see what others have been up to.

Nice mod man. I was just about to "attempt" to make some g10 scales for my grip. But of course I lost it right after I bought a dremel. So that project went down the drain. But hey at least I have a new dremel sitting around. Got to look at the bright side.

I didn't like the tip down either, but it was an easy enough fix to tip up. Only thing missing is an axis lock.

You ought to post some pictures of your spydercos in their subforum.

Strigamort -- I'm feelin' what you're saying about the 810... Even in the relatively short time I've had the Contego -- I've thought selling my other knives and buying a backup of this model. BM allows buying of just the blade part? I'll have to look into that! ;-) Thanks for the insight on the BM specific forum -- I'll check it out!

Goephoto -- definitely have to look at the bright side of things... Life is too short to see otherwise. Hope you come across a new blade that inspires you to use that dremel, man!

Spketch -- That's cool you had the confidence and skill to modify your military to tip up. I was too afraid of making a mistake and ruining the handle. I never thought to post pics of stock production folders, only because they are so uniform in look and dimensions. I kind of feel like unless it's been modified even slightly, people already know what they look like so there would be no interest.

I should clarify. They have a blade replacement option should yours break, or otherwise become unusable. The price is great too, $25 for uncoated, $30 for coated regardless of steel[!] So long as it's still in production or still have replacements in stock.

As for them selling just the blade, they won't do that. I've heard that they will sell and install one if you send in the knife sans blade. That may only make sense if the blade got lost from it breaking at the pivot or something, or maybe they won't do it at all. Just what I've heard, but calling is always a good idea. ;)

Strigamort -- Thanks for the clarification! :) Those are excellent prices for blade replacement! I'll definitely call them about it, to find out the details.

Neat mod. I can see removing some of the jumping as it is very aggressive.

You have done a great job explaining your post to ShepardCC. Frankly, as evidenced by those who rallied to your suppport, you had nothing to defend. I have just recently joined this forum, and I am completely new to the whole forum culture. What is not new to me is common sense, courtesy, and objectively reasonable commentary. ShepardCC has proven that tenure in this forum or others is no guarantee of any of the aforementioned.

BTW, I dig your modded Contego!
