I just finished this project and thought I would share the results.

CustomBM330.jpg

I was tired of the boring black and silver of all of my knives and thought that I wanted something better looking. Since I couldn't afford the pearl or micarta version of the Benchmade 330, I took my G10 version and disassembled it. I borrowed a VDC power supply and anodized the liners a golden color. I replaced the nylon washers with bronze washers and reassembled it. I then took some cocobolo, cut a thin slice, and split it to get mirror image scales. I finished the scales using Teak oil. The total process took about 2.5 hours of my time and the only materials used were the wood, washers, sandpaper, Teak oil and Coke, maybe $5.00. This is my first customization project...I will do more.

What do you think?

I like that a lot! In only 2.5 hours, very impressive indeed. Nice knife, less 'tactical', very practical.

Send it to me! But this doesn't mean were going steady or anything? Funny story PhilL, only because I don't understand my wife either...but I never have given her a knife...I would have kept that one for myself.

Jeff, you realize, of course, you "voided the warranty..." heh, heh, heh.

I said it in another section, and I'll say it again. A fantastic job!

jj, I just thought, "Girls like Pearls" how can I go wrong? As for me, make mine Stag!

That's awesome man...maybe you can be our new local Benchmade mod. guy?

DonL - warranty? what warranty? :0
PhilL - me too...maybe a BM 330 with stag!

Wow, that's nice. I think I'll look into getting an Axis to look like that. Maybe that's what BM should do, instead of using the red/black G10 on the Ares.

It really doesn't look like a Buck at all in person. The picture doesn't quite do it justice. Great job jeffj! Now you'll have to do one for me!

Very, very attractive indeed!

Were the orginal scales glued on 'liners' or were they fastened only with screws?

One day I'll hope to do modification to BM 330 too.

Thanks all for the complements...

JB - The Axis lock is a whole other customization project. The scales will have to be recessed to accept the springs for the lock. It won't be easy.

Chris - buy one and let's do it.

Tommi - the scales are only attached by some small hex screws. The customization was really simple on this one...just required a little patience.

Very Nice work! I carry a BM330 almost daily. I personally don't mind the original setup, but I've often wondered why BM has not made some modifications themselves. The 330 is just begging to be modified!

As far as the axis locks go, yes the scales do need to be recessed. I already took mine apart (mostly), to check on that. A couple of seconds with a dremel is all it needs. As soon as I saw that 330, I just had to see if I could make an axis look that nice. Now I just wish the liners were Ti (hmm, I have access to a machine shop...).

JB - the liners are Ti! What are you using a dremel for? The hex screws come off with just a hex key...a very small one.

jj

JB, just a pointer on the Axis lock. I've had mine completely apart. The only difficulty I had was figuring out how to get the thumb bolt and lock bolt off. They both fasten the same way. If you look at the sides of each bolt you notice holes opposite of each other. These accept a tool that allows you to unscrew the bolts. I rigged up something that would work. Good luck...and show us your work when you get done.
