I have taken an interest in modifying Imperial knives. I really like the thinly ground carbon steel, and they are widely available in rough shape begging to be fixed up! I recently upgraded to the craftsman subscription to make it all legit! This is by no means a source of income, but if I can sell one of these once in a while it helps me keep the hobby going. I still have a lot to learn, but very much enjoy working on these knives. Thanks for looking! Feedback via PM is more than welcome.
This knife began as another clam shell knife, tang stamp dates anywhere from 1956 to 1988. It has carbon steel blades, pretty sure anyway. It was a two blade barlow initially. I disassembled the knife and cleaned everything. I salvaged the saw cut handle slabs from a 1940s era camillus barlow that had been neglected and abused beyond repair. The sizing was a bit different, so I have to make it work on the Imperial frame with a bit of sanding and new pin holes. I fabricated new nickel silver bolsters, and the pins are hand hammered and domed nickel silver. I converted it to single-blade by removing the middle liner and pen blade that came on it. I sanded everything smooth along the liners, and buffed everything to a smooth surface, but making sure to keep most of the original character of the bone. Blade has okay snap opening, and faint snap closing. Negligible blade play. Pull is about a 6, and I'm able to pinch open it without using the nail nick. Using 400 grit wet sanding, I put a slight satin on the blade. Finally, I put a new bevel and edge on the old blade with my Edge Pro, going up to 1000 grit. The knife is about 3 and 1/4 inches closed.
Centering is close to perfect, favoring the pile side slightly. No blade rub going on, other than around the pivot of course. There is a slight crack at the last pin on both sides, but this was there before assembly and appears very stable. It survived all the sanding and pin peening without issue.
