Customized knives- a plea

Before I start I would like to reiterate that I am a Big Emerson fan and have everyone of the production models.

I would dearly like to get a CQC7 with bolsters but the price is just out of my league. These knives are designed for and used by LEO's but unfortunately LEO's are grossly underpaid in my opinion putting these knives out of reach for blokes like me. I know, I can keep using the production models but I recently got a Microtech LCC for less than I paid for my Commanders and it is very, very nicely made, comes with micarta scales and bolsters. To get the Commander with bolsters is an extra 250 bucks!

I am prepared to pay more for these customized versions but at a price. If you're out there Derek, could you please address this issue for me? I would appreciate it.

A fully custom/handmade CQC6/7 is out of my league when it comes to the prices they are going for and I was hoping the customized production models would fill the void.

ps. When are those Blackbirds going to hit the shops? The Raven had the best feeling handle of any Emerson IMHO and the G10 scales should beef it up a bit. I'm looking forward to picking one up.

Cheers

Pete

I'll second the plea.

(oops, edited out some senseless babbling. Left the rest of the senseless babbling)

I also just got a Microtech LCC not too long ago, I'm thrilled with it. As you said, very very nicely made. Quite frankly it fills all of my needs in a folding pocket knife. But I still gotta carry something with a wave on it, so I do the left-pocket-in-the-front thing. Drawing it into a reverse grip. Nifty.

I will defer to anyone who can offer a valid argument to the contrary, but until then, these are my feelings on bolsters.

What is the purpose of a bolster on a folder other than for visual appeal? Seriously? If the liners and scales are strong, it seems to me, they are purely for appearance.

With the LCC D/A version, the bolster serves a purpose other than looks, on the M/A version, they are just "there" for looks...

I do understand where you are coming from, "If X can do it for X price, EKI is overcharging..."

I agree that $250.00 for Ti-Bolsters on a knife that is $220.00 [Commander] or a whole lot less for other models is a bit of a stretch.

For the cost of having a Ti-Bolstered Production Commander, you could have a right and left hand Commander. Very simple choice to me. My ego is such that I don't have to murder my wallet to appeal to it for what is basically a cosmetic attachment...

Do I like bolsters? Yeah...not that much though. The market will dictate the price or eliminate the option one way or the other. Past that, it's not an issue for me.

I think you hit about 70% of the nail's head on that one. Visual appeal is the big catch. But obviously bolsters add two other things, they add weight, and give the knife a more solid feel. I'll admit that neither adds anything to the function of the knife, and the knife is probably no more solid in reality, or at least not much more. But if it's me I prefer a more solid feeling and slightly heavier knife.

As an afterthought you might say bolsters would add some pain to an impact, if using the handle of the knife to strike to the inside. Which hurts more, steel or G10 to the side of the head? I don't know, and I don't plan on finding out :) But I would think that bolsters would hurt more. Of course, this only applies if you carry the knife for self defense, or take into account that possibility.

RE: Bolsters

In my experience, bolsters help protect the (often) softer/less durable handle scale material when the knife is in use.

Granted, with the newer "tactical" style materials like G10 this is not much (if at all) an issue. However for those many folders with scales made from natural materials (and the more fragile of the synthetics) bolsters do serve a purpose.

My $0.02,
Mark

This is not to add to the functionality of bolsters or other customized/modifyed additions that one can do to a knife, but to more alert the people on this forum to something... I am currently working on starting a project with a friend of mine and well you never know, it might provide results that some of you are interested in. Just though I would let you know -- sorry I don't have much information quite yet at this time though...
Thanks -- i will keep you all posted,
