As you can see in the pictures there's a real high polish to the blade. The discoloration you see is the beginnings of a nice patina that it gained from years in storage. This puppy rings LOUDLY when struck--usually a strong indicator that the handle and tang are nice and tightly joined.

Don't be afraid of the 1.5 mm thickness! This thing is a beast, and will chop well. By putting all of the mass behind the cutting edge, penetration during the cut is increased since you don't have to displace as much material. Thickness is about equal to your typical Tramontina, but this is much wider!
