Customizing Buck 110

Does anyone else do any custom work on Buck knives? If so, have you disassembled a new folder lately?

I bought a new 110 to customize and popped the scales off and took the lock out. There was quite a bit of a viscous black gunk in the knife, particularly on the lock bar. At first I thought it was some type of graphite but its very greasy. There was a fair amount on the interior of the liners too.

I think the Buck folders, especially the 110 and 112 are pretty neat folders, but the amount of gunk was a surprise. Is it normal?

When knives are polished on buffing wheels, the polishing compound gets inside.
