I need to send a knife to Thailand for a repair and was wondering if the shipee would still have to pay the customs charges if it's for a repair rather than a new product? I thought I had read here somewhere that if it's for a repair they won't charge the extra $100 or so? Does anyone know one way or the other?

TIA,

Greg

Hi Greg,

I don't think custom regulation here can seperate between a repair and new one. For my experience, they charge the same rate. If you declare the knife as a broken tool/ hand tool, this may help lower the custom charges.

BTW, is that Yuna Knives? If yes, I will tell him to contact you.

Cheers,
Ek :)

pinkcow,
Thanks for the help and the offer but I've already been talking with Yun and was just wondering if there was a way around the charges on a repair. I thought I had heard that repairs weren't taxed like new stuff but I may be wrong.

thanks,

Greg

It's more of an adjustment than something that's broken. I picked it up from a dealer that took it in as a trade so it's "new to me" but not new new if you follow.

hiya ..

one sure way is to use the same shipping company to send and receive it .. i sent a keris for repair to indonesia via UPS... when it came back it was labelled as returned after repair.. however the assigned customs guy asked for the full amount on the value of the keris .. i just pointed them to the original shipment and they just charged me on the value of the work

normally they just get a pass but sometimes they don't ..

cheers

But I'm thinking the taxes would be applied when the recipient first recieves it rather than when it is coming back. I may be wrong on this of course.

thanks,

Greg

I've decided to wait for a friend of Yun's in the States to go visit him and I'll send the knife with him. Less hassle than trying to figure out a way around the crazy tax.

thanks,
