jest wandering
do you use Buck Customs ?
what are your thoughts on that
now i am not talking of jest 110's here
i am speaking of all Buck Customs or Liimited Editions !
yes the big bowies ect with the 900 numbers included !!
i include the David Yellowhorse, Reddrum Ghosttown knives in this also

i know many do use the 110 customs that are under 150$
but i am talking of the ones over 200$
in real cost or current investment value..

poll results open

My heart and mentality say "no safe queens" they are knives 1st an use the snot out of em.(I didnt vote that way BTW) But that never seems to happen. I dont have any that qualify but a classic like my 1st version 112 I will carry and light use but never use it hard-except if I happen to be carrying it when I get lost on a dessert island:p

I use 'em, they are knives after all, and thats what I enjoy! Besides it helps increase the value of everyone elses safe queens :D

One of my favorite users is a Custom Shop NS S30V Sambar Stag 110. I ordered it to be a user. I see nothing wrong with using a LE or Custom, as long as I have at least one back-up that will stay pristine. They are knives, not sculptures. But I do like keeping examples unused. Certain knives I'll never use. In those cases it would be like buying a beer with a $20 gold piece and getting $17 back in change. I don't use gold etch bladed knives.

But why not have a special, deluxe knife made for you or a LE that will be a user. Why should a user have to be ugly?

If you buy it, it's your knife.

Hi Dave,

I can't vote on your poll because, I do not use any of my art LE/SO's as they are for looking at. However, a current custom shop knife is a fancy user and may or may not be part of my EDC club. Your poll does not have that at as voting category.

I vote that I don't use art (gold etch) LE's or old school CS knives, but, will use a CS 110.

Dave, Most here know I'll use most any knife . However, I'll agree with some here in that I won't use the Club Gold Etched or any etched knives or my early 110's/112's and all the ones already in my display cases . But I have spares of the early Empress Trio sets and use those . They're a great kitchen knife ! A 70's 121, the 800 LE series knives, (even w/ the signatures those are a great knife) a 70's 103, a 70's 119, a 70's 105, 307 ect..
So, many yes but just a few, no . DM

If I want to use a custom or LE, i'll buy one for display and one to use, sometimes i'll buy a dozen of the same just in case, lolol, i guess that's why i'm going broke, or at least my knife buying budget has dwindled to next to nothing. I say buy'em, use'em, display'em, sell'em, trade'em and keep'em, give'em away so we can keep Buck Knives INc. in business.

Hi Dave,I just recently got my 1st Buck Custom.I don't plan on using it,as my users get some pretty hard use,and get sharpened often.Just like honesttom said,I've been buying several new Buck knives lately to help them stay in business.I plan on buying several more!I know the down turn in the economy has hit Buck hard and the only bail-out they're gonna get is from guys like us.(Buck Is An American Icon)

i dont own a custom honestly...my mentality is knives are tools and tools are meant to be used. not that they cant be easy on the eyes in their basic form. my 112 i bought in the past is as pretty as it gets imo due to its "classic" status

The only Custom Shop or LE I'd ever carry for "real use" would be perhaps one of the $73 CS's that you can get put together. If I needed a better steel, I'd order the S30V blade for $13 more.

I don't see the point in aquiring a piece of art as many of the LE's and customs are and turning them into a tool. Do I carry one like that? Occasionally just for show and tell, but never to "use the snot out of it".

hee hee hee ROFLMAO
i like P'falls answer best!!
guess i should vote also...
humm no one has said of the
Big Hunking 900 series knives yet..
any one care to comment on thoes?
my thoughts are those are made as art work to start with..
and thus never in tended to use to start with..
but they are knives after all...
and in a SHTF (Stuff hits the fan) world can save your life..

I use several of mine.

I have a few for collection sake only, but not many. If I like it I tend to use it:D

Better for you collectors out there if I depreciate a lot of them for you:)

It doesn't make sense to use them. They are the same as standard production knives; only prettier. They aren't going to function any differently, and they can't be admired while they're being used.

Plus, heavy use will ruin the beauty sooner or later. What are you going to say to those that see it? "Look at this one! It used to be pretty before I abused it!"

Why not start with an ugly duckling in the first place?;)

I agree with you two pertaining to some of my knives. However, I want a nice looking user, too. Not to open paint cans with, but for general light use. Whatever dings, scratches, or wear from sharpening that will occur will give the knife character. That general-use user will become an "old friend". It's a pleasure to work with a beautiful, fine knife. It will mean more to me than it will to anyone who sees it. And they are not necessarily production knives only prettier, because they often have higher quality steel. (I have a few nice users in rotation.) Heavy use for me requires a "plain Jane" or old beater.

So I have 3 categories, I guess. LEs and "rare birds" that I don't use. LEs and customs that will get general or light use (currently up to $250.). And then there are the workhorses, the standard production knives and old beaters.

Sure it makes sense! We want to use them :D I had a Buck Rush that was an expensive L.E. knife, it had S30V steel. I Loved using that over the standard 420Hc model, and the only way to get the S30V was the L.E. Custom. It did perform much better BTW ;) Prettier, yeah, it had Paua shell inlays, but it cut like no tomorrow!

Thank you sir!!! There needs to be more thoughtful people like you :D:D

 I'm just doing my part :D Hey PR, dont you use an 805? or 3? LOL

I love the 800 series, great hunting knives, so what if they ar limited to 1000?
I cant get a 102 in S30V :D

I can't explain it, maybe its pride of ownership? I dont know. Kinda like taking Dads classic deer rifle in the woods. Yeah it may be a Pre '64 lever gun, but she sure is fun to use- NOT abuse. I think using a custom or L.E. knife isnt abuse, its use! I love it when I get the chance to use my BG-42 110 to clean a whitetail or a limit of doves, or grouse etc..... :D

Here's more....

I have five or six of the recently discontinued folding S30V Kalingas in brass and rosewood and I doubt that I'll ever carry one of those.

To me they are just as beautiful and artfully crafted as my Customs.

I also have a couple of the Idaho stamped cocobola/brass 120s stashed away. Since there were 250 or fewer manufactured......I'm keeping them pristine.

My kids can cherish them or sell them when I die, but I don't see any point in using them.

:)
