Well, it finially happened. After collecting knives for 20 something years and recently starting to make knives, I cut myself.

Oddly enough, I cut myself while tying a lanyard to a freshly sharpened knife that was still in the sheath. I was pulling on the lanyard and not really paying attention, when the knife came out of the kydex sheath and cut me at the first knuckle on my index finger down to the bone.

Lots of blood...everywhere. I've never cut myself like that before, so all of the blood was a bit of a shock. The cut was clean, so it only took 3 stitches. No major damage. Doctor said I should be OK. I can bend my finger fine, so nothing too serious. It certainly hurts though! Coedine helps a bit, but it's still sore. It's pretty hard not to bend your finger all day!

Needless to say, I won't be making knives for a while. I've contacted all my customers who have orders, to let them know about the setback. I hate to make people wait, but sometimes things come up.

I guess the moral of the story is to be careful! Hopefully this will be the first and last time I do this to myself. I still can't beleive that I did this tying a lanyard. I'm still pretty pissed about the whole thing. I don't even feel like looking at a knife right now.

Be careful out there guys!

Johnathan,

Now you're a real knife maker/collector :D. I've cut myself so many times over the years while using knives, I've lost count. Usually it's because I'm so engrossed in what I'm doing that I don't realize I'm about to do something stupid. I had a cut just like your about a year and a half ago. The doc told me that he'd have just taped it up rather than come in for stitches, but I felt the knife bottom out on the bone and felt better about having it stitched. I have had other clean cuts to the bone that I just put pressure on and let them close up. The worst part is cleaning the cut. I just consider it penance for cutting myself in the first place.

super-glue works better than stitches. If you get it quick a lot of times it wont even be sore.My right index finger i cut several years ago almost off. The blade hit the bone and just followed it a 1 1/2 cost me 2500. bucks. 6 monthes later i got the left side almost just like my right. Superglue and duct-tape fixed it. It took longer to heal.

I actually thought about gluing it. However, I was alone so it would have been really difficult to do properly.

I believe cauterizing with a hot poker is the next best technique to superglue.

Yeah but you have to be a REAL man to do that. Or be like Stacy and just whip out a needle and thread and stitch it up yourself Rambo style.

Glad to hear you're okay but my signature sums it up best :D

Stacy kicked it up a notch there. Not quite to the standard of the hiker who got his arm wedged in between two large boulders and amputated his own arm with a pocket knife; but Stacy is a close second with the cross stitching.

Stacy; did you do a tutorial on that repair technique?

Bah! Stacy would gnaw his arm off with his teeth and save the blade for when he REALLY needed it ;)

What no pictures????

Glad to hear your ok though.

Snapped a nice picture of the wound, and the absolutely massive blade that inflicted the damage. ;)

I got cut the other day- usually I am careful, and rarely does this happen. I was reaching above my head, prying at a knot on a tarp grommet and using this piece of $#*& chinese cheapo liner lock, when the lock failed and the ONLY sharp 1/4" of the blade nicked the crap out of my finger. Figures.

Rambo would have stitched it up himself ;)
I would have probably passed out when they hit it with the Novacaine!
Glad your OK
