got a new millie in s30 last week & wanted to see how it held up in edge durability against zdp189.the stretch had been rebeveled but the millie felt fine so i went thru this sequence: dmt fine diamond--spydie white-- diamond loaded strop--.remembering a tip from knifenut 1013 i thought i should be mind ful of diamond micron size & i backed down to this sequence:white spydie--regular untreated leather strop--& a final hand palm strop. made 40 15 in. cuts in 275 lb. edge crush card.ran out of this stuff & made 20 12 in. cuts in 250 lb. burst strength card.each knife was tested on leg hair in intervals & both would shave leg hair at end of 60 cuts each. i felt the zdp was slightly sharper & gave it a higher rating since it's blade was 1/2 in. shorter. 10 strops on diamond strop & 8 passes on diamond strop brought the blades back to original keenness.[ 8--s30, 10--zdp.] this is not a labroratory empirical test -- with that in mind i would appreciate no questions about final edge bevels, pounds of force needed & hand comfort during cutting. i offer no conclusion only the results.dennis
as a follow up note the finish on the spydie was'nt marred. this cardboard was so tuff the blades heated on each cut. i thought the black finish would wear on the millie but i could detect no abrasion. kudos to spydie on an excellent blade coating.
In a rough comparison cutting manila rope, I found a Buck S30V blade to keep an edge longer than Spyderco VG10, but not as well as ZDP-189. I have yet to measure the hardness of the Buck S30V blade. The Spyderco ZDP blade, borrowed from Dennis, was measured at 62HRC. The VG10 was 59 HRC.
