What is the best way to cut this piece for making scales?

The dimensions are 16" x 8.5" x 2.5".

I believe it is a piece of black walnut about 30 years old. Light finish on the side shown.

I am interested in this piece but also in some general ideas about how to work raw wood for scales or hidden tang handles.

All ideas appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your reply.

Is the consensus hands down for quartersawn?

I am aware of that cut, but want to be sure I am doing my best by this piece.

What would an angled cut do (less that 90 degrees)?

Crosscut would probably be too weak, but maybe not. I really do not know.

It's a piece with some sentimental value.

quartersawn will maximize the grain pattern and the usable wood. an angle cut will give you dramatic ray fleck patterns. don't use crosscut - too weak. slice off an end and angle cut it. experiment with the angle of cut to find the best ray pattern. remember to wet the wood when you are looking - it will make the grain pattern stand out.
