I can't comment on Cutco steel, but I've got a bunch of Cutcos. They do a good job as long as you occasionally sharpen them.
Cutco serations are very easy to sharpen with a Spyderco Sharpmaker and the PE models are just like any other knife as far as the sharpening effort goes. I've likely got 10 or so different Cutcos in the kitchen along with my Spyderco kitchen knives.
I have to admit that I reach for Spyderco first and Cutco next, but ... that's just me. Cutco does do a great job in the kitchen.
