CUTS: Thoughts and Questions

No phuckin' S*H*I*T?
That's a jaw dropper. I did NOT know that. Holy Crap! Shock!
That puts some perspective on things!

So... my thoughts of taking a shot of tequilla when I started feeling that way probably wouldn't be a good idea, huh?

So, I'm getting some good advise on what to do with myself but, honestly, I'm a little too far down stream to do any of those things now. The damn thing's practically sealed by now. Next time.

I never expected some of the hilarious replys in this thread.:D

I've given myself a few nice deep cuts. have yet to have stiches, and only one has been looked at by a doc. Mind you though, I have a medical family. about 3/4 are nurses or aids. I also have my emerg first aid, cpr-b, and experience.

I stabbed myself in the thigh at my last job, have to find the date again(made a post about it when it happened, over on the spyderco.com forum). about 1/2" of tip(in, not wide) from my spyderco millie. missed everything, despite hitting in the centre of my thigh(near groin). Should have gotten stitches, but it wasn't too bad(just a bit open for 2-3 weeks). Just lived with it, nothing on it. bled about 2hrs that night, as I was forced to walk at work. closed but couldn't clot 100%. just leaking.

The one that I had looked at was when I sliced my thumb on an airvent at work. fixing it and it fell. went to the doc and about 30-45min after the cut I was seen. he moved it open to look, and just put butterfly tension strips over it, and gave me 2 weeks off work(maintanence with chemicals). emerg training had me treat it correctly when it occured. Bled out under a luke-warm tap, about 5 min, then wrapped it in a rough papertowel, placing the flap of skin over the wound to clot back on. then reported it to a manager when it was slowed(almost stopped) bleeding. bled about 30min total. that was late 01.

have a nice scar down the outside of my right index, thumb side. dumb accident back in 99. no feeling on the side of my finger. was down to the bone. again bled out & cleaned, wrapped, and kept dry.

that said, I have a rather high pain tolerance, and don't get queezy easily. the only one so far was the thigh, and that made me want to throw up and faint, but I had to take care of it. Didn't even see what kind of damage I had done till the next day when I had a shower while it was clotted.

I get queezy very easily! :barf: :barf: :barf: :barf: :barf: :barf:
Thanks man.....you got me going now! :barf: :barf:

After 35 years of industrial experience, when in doubt, get medical attention.

I've been caught by all manner of sharp implements over the years and have the scars to prove it. Yes I have managed to stab/cut myself badly a few times.

The bottom line; There is a golden hour if major damage has been done. Your chances for complete recovery or reduced disability are running out with the clock. In the worst case, you will need the paperwork for insurance or your disability claim. Not to mention the chance you might have a lawsuit pending.

The only thing about stitches is to count them yourself, I had a toe crushed once and when they removed the stitches they missed one. The infection was worse then the injury.

I've grown accustomed to knowing when I need stitching but have not had the need for a couple of decades (safety first). The last time I took myself in for a forehead laceration and was more concerned with getting it clean and getting a tetnus booster. They didn't stitch that one but I'm glad I went in to get it cleaned out.

I have taken out my own stitches a time or three (when there was no insurance), no big deal. The first time I did that was because a couple failed before the week was up.

Scars, yup; quite a few

Cheers

Call me a sissy, but I like professional medical care. When I'm cut (which is far too often, but not always on a blade (I seem to have a love/hate relationship with glass), and unless pouring or squirting, I'll let it bleed, preferably under cold running water. And afterwards, if I can't fix it with a band aid or two, that's it, I'm off for the doc. Twenty years ago, a friend virtually forced me to go to the doc for a cut knuckle, and I'm glad he did. Nicked the bone and tendon, and even with professional cleaning and stitches, still wound up fighting a nasty infection. I still feel that one on cold days. Last trip to an ER was just a month ago, for my wife, while camping in Florida. Cut her thumb trying to cut a grapefruit with (irony) a crappy dull knife. She didn't want to go to ER; I made her. They gave her a booster shot, but didn't stitch her. I would have. Instead, they used some sort of clear artificial skin stuff. She gave me grief initially, but that thing bled for three days, particularly when changing that plastic skin stuff. After that, she agreed stitches would have been better. BTW, picked her up a nice new paring knife on the way back to camp.

I just want to remind everyone about my main real question:
When do you go get stitches and when do you not?

The only time I have gotten stitches was when I didn't have a choice. I got knocked out of the back of a pickup doing about 45 wearing shorts and tennis shoes only. It hurt, I couldn't get up, I got stitches so that's pretty much my rule of thumb.

The rest of the times I just sucked it up, my mom was always freaking out when I was a kid. Like the time I busted my head open and filled the washing machine with bloody towels. I was an idiot and didn't actually start the washing machine.:( DOH! She found it and got nuts, fortunately my step dad was former pre-med told her to calm down. He made me a nifty home made butterfly bandage and that was it.

Of course in Basic Training everbody was asking wth happened to your head but that's OK!:)

If you look at the cut and think "I wonder if that needs stitches?" You prob should go have it looked at.
