Cutting a burl question

That looks a lot like Oregon myrtle burl I've used and have on a guitar top. Very pretty wood you have there.
That's kind of what I was thinking, but couldn't remember Myrtle for life of me!

Thanks, it smells like redwood sometimes then it smells like juniper the next time, then doug fir, then home depot lumber department. I know nothing:D It did wash up on an Oregon beach though.
On edit, I did a google image search for Oregon Myrtle and it looks pretty much the same.

You never know, it could have come from Alaska or Russia.

That's it. It's aromatic Siberian-squirrely-firmapple wood. Yep, I'm sure of it...:p

Things can float a long time at sea, but I'm willing to bet it came from the PNW or Northern CA.

I love that wood!;)

If it has been in water, was it salt water?

Would that salt be soaked in the wood and cause problems later?

I think it really needs a few years of seasoning/drying in my shop :D

I'm jealous. I love beautiful burls... :)

On the not knifemaking side.... I could see some beautiful bowls and stuff made out of parts of that also......

Bowls? You're talented! I'm afraid to even slice the thing!:p

I think it's plenty seasoned, about twenty years, mostly used a a door stop in my brother shed.:D

Really great looking grain! It looks like you may have found your cut direction but I would take a couple of slices from another direction or at the very least be watching as you slice it. It may start to change direction part of the way thru! Beautiful stuff though!!!!!!

I can see several beautiful turned pieces in that burl.... :( In the picture you show in the lower right hand corner of the burl there's a large bump, if you could cut that off and take it to a local woodworking store, not Lowes or something but where serious craftsmen go (or look for the local wood turning club) you could get a nice bowl made out of that.

A friend of mine is a very high end furniture maker and I've seen him make a cabinet out of something like that. This was a few years ago and I don't have pictures of it. :( He made deep cuts into the burl the carved drawers out of the chunks he cut out and they'd slide back in..... really cool.

Maybe it will inspire me, I haven't made a knife in a while. I've seen those little drawers before, they're pretty cool.

That burl is natural art, worked by water and wind. I'd love to have it sitting on my bench as I draw knives. :D
