Cutting Back

I was heavily into competitive shotgun sports for decades and bought/sold/traded my through more shotguns than I can remember. I just got my first “real” knife and I can see that right now I’m at the same point with knives that I was at with shotguns when I started shooting trap a long time ago. I started out with cheap guns and traded my way up and into costly Berettas. I think this time I’ll skip the starting in cheap and trading up thing. As of now, my goal is that the next knife I buy needs to be at the quality level of my old Beretta 471EL.

So after all this, I'm apparently collecting electrician's knives.

This tang stamp is part of the reason, but it might not mean that the knife was actually made in New York. I thought Camillus was bought up by Taylor Brands Mega Conglomerate, and shipped over seas, but I wasn't paying attention.

Glare-free photos are almost impossible.

I figured I would wander around a local flea market this morning, and the price was very right. It had a touch of the "red death" rust on the blades, but some 220 and motor oil fixed that. I went over the other surfaces with 320, then 400 for the black Delrin. Finally, everything got a wipe down with the boot waxing rag. Between the Neet's Foot oil, saddle soap, and beeswax on that thing, I'm pretty sure the rust won't come back for a while.

What keeps bringing me back to the SAK-type multitools over single-blades, is how much more useful they are. I suppose I'll return to modern folders eventually, but for now, I seem to have a new hobby....

The anticipation of owning something new and actually getting it are usually pretty far apart. Perfectly normal and has been going on since a Caveman traded for a "better" club only to find out: it's a club and does the same thing as his last club, it just has flashy feathers on it. the next day he sees a club with feathers AND tiger fangs..oh why oh WHY did he buy the stupid feather-only club? :(Pretty soon he's being nagged for buying the "Shaman 7500 BC Limited Edition Club" by his wife, who complains he has far too many clubs and really only uses the original club he had out of fear of breaking all these expensive ones. He packs up all his clubs and goes to the Village square, intent on coming home with 8 wife-pleasing livestock animals and zero fancy clubs, but arrives home with a Limited Edition Spear with flashy feathers and tiger fangs, turquoise, the works. "But Honey, this spear THE spear, Oggo never need more spear, this spear best spear of all spears...". Seeing his happiness and realizing Oggo is gonna be Oggo, she drops the subject. The day of the Big Hunt comes and Oggo shows up, to enjoy the jealousy and admiration of his peers which only half works out because half of them also have the same spear. During the hunt, Oggo breaks the spear, but is consoled by the fact that the Far Tribe Maker promised spear not break, so he packs it back, to be told that he'll get a replacement spear as good as new in 4-6 moons, if the maker can keep up with demand. Dejected and temporarily spearless, Oggo returns to his club for hunting, but..there's a guy three tribes over with a NEW thing. A pouch that throws rocks! What a wondrous age! Oggo and five other guys make plans to head over there ASAP. :D

About 12 years ago, my wife at the time, (now my ex-wife), and I, met our relationship's demise. It was a tough time, and although I had amassed a decent eclectic collection of items, their view only reminded me of my failed marriage, (one that had lasted 18 years). Anyhow, I simply had lost the zest I had had for so long in my collecting hobby. I sold off my collection of goods for 5k cash, although I knew it was worth SEVERAL times that much, I no longer wanted them in my life. Fast forward to a couple of years later, when a new eclectic collection began, (a couple guns and a few U.S. made traditional pocket knives). The fun in the hobby had returned again, and this time without any sentimental attachments to any romantic relationship. My current eclectic and self titled "Man Gadget Collection", (now about 10 years old), has been giving me the same joy the previous collection used to give me :)
I believe that the hard time I went through 12 years ago, put me in a time of depression. It was simply hard to enjoy some of the things I had enjoyed earlier. I don't see that as abnormal, but rather something that can be expected during such difficult times. I am glad to have been able to rebound from that situation, and glad that it caused me no permanent loss of enjoying the things I enjoyed prior to it all :)

Ive become very picky about what I buy now,my only problem is some of the good deals on the exchange throw a monkey wrench into me trying not to buy as much. I just got a Wilson combat les George eagle like new for 225.00,those are the kinds of deals I cannot walk away from.Someone shut that exchange down before I get into trouble !!
