i dont venture to this part of the forums so often and i am not a professional knifemaker. however, i am trying to cut some blade blanks out of an old cross-cut saw blade. i have the blanks all drawn out already. i attempted to cut them with a dremel and that worked fine for a little bit of the cutting, but then the cutting wheel broke. i replaced the cutting wheel and it broke again after cutting about an inch. i then tried a few hacksaws, but none of them can cut the steel. any advice or tips would be really appreciated.

oh, and i dont have many advanced tools. i have a dremel and some hacksaws. so if there were just a dremel attatchment that would work for this, let me know.

thanks.

you need to get a right angle grinder which is what i use for cutting my blanks once i have strips cut with a plasma torch.

You will break a lot of cutoff wheels. Just part of the price you have to pay to do things that way.

I still use old saw blades to make broadheads. What I have found to be the most efficient use of materials is to use the cutoff whees to scribe a line half way through the material then clamp the material on the line in a vice and break it with a hammer. Finnish shaping with a grinder.

thanks mike for mentioning the tip on cutting the blade half way through. thats the way i do it but forgot to mention that part. (it sucks to get old:D)

Fiberglass reinforced cut-off wheels will do the job better. I dislike the other once, they break and sent pieces flying everywhere at a rather zippy velocity. the also last longer, just dont put too much pressure on them.
