Hi everybody !:D
In the near futur, i will be the proud owner of a Cutting Competition knife from Jerry Lairson MS... Did someone already have one of these knives ? How sharp and strong are they ? How good is the Teac Handle ?
Generally, how good are the performance of cutting competions knives ?
If you have some pictures of yours, it will be very nice to see them (new in box or in action...) :)
Thanks in advance for your answers !

Hey Vince,

I haven't used one of Lairson's competition knives, but I have handled one and quite liked it.

Here's Dan Farr's 5th generation competition cutter:

And some action shots:

(In this, my first attempt, all of one bottle fell to my mighty swing :o . Some improvement followed. ;) )

And here we have Reggie Barker's competition cutter with matching hunter (Border guard camp set):

I guarantee you that knife will cut - two world championships are hard to argue with. ;)

And a Barker action shot from SOS 2004 (Reggie won. That happens a lot.):

And some of the competition knives used at that event:

There - that'll teach you to ask for pics on one of my favorite subjects. :p

Yeah it is, but just try to get one, especially if Roger, Stephen F, or Peter G are at the show. Dan's booked up at LEAST 2 years right now, probably more.

If you have the means, a cutter from Bailey Bradshaw, Adam DesRosiers, Burt Foster, or Jason Knight is a great value, and will perform as you ask it to. At that point, any failure will be on the part of the user.:o

Heres the knife I just finished as my first prototype cutting comp knife. Hasn't seen action yet beyond the shop.....did some heavy sculpting on the handle that will continue to be modified through testing. Features a ridge that rests between the thumb and pointer finger in forward grips and I really like the feel. Butt is flared. Is slightly asymmetrical, concave more where the fingers curl in and a bit more convex where it swells into the hand.

15" OAL, 10" blade, almost 2" wide in the belly, tapering in width toward the ricasso slightly. 1/4" O-1 stock. Stock removal (Not set up to forge at this point). Fulltang, fully skeletonized. Balances 2.5" in front of choil.

Will have full set of pics when it has a sheath...

I have one of Jerry's cutters. Beat the snot out of that knife and it has performed superbly. The edge was a little thick when I got it so I thinned and convexed it just a bit more and have been very pleased with it. The handle feels nice in my hand and since it's pretty rough and unpolished it provides great purchase. I'm sure you'll be very happy with it.

Well ! Thanks for your answer !
Personnally, i like "Hair-Popping sharp" knives... I mostly consider knives as a cutting tool : the best they cut, the most like them...
I've got some Busses and a Swamp Rat CT : my Busse FSH was a poor cutter until i give it to a professionnal sharpener who put a very good V edge on it : it's now a "scary" sharp cutter, really really sharp that i will use first in my campings chores...
I hope to see what is "Shiva Ki" Sharpeness one day (directly from Shiva Ki in order to see what is a legendray sharp edge...) But i have some Frenchmaker's knives (especially from one that i like better than the other :D ), that were so sharp and so low priced that i can't imagine you can do better !!!
I'm really waiting for this MS knife, in order to compare it to my "best knife"...:)

Which French makers?

Thanks - JD

Jerry makes one fine cutting knife. I am glad he is not a youngen any more or some of us would be in trouble.
Reggie

Did you get one of Jerry's with the tuning fork in the handle so you know when you are hitting with the sweet spot?? hE MAKES VERY NICE KNIVES.

The French maker is Xavier Conil : he made this wonderfull Bowie specially for me :

The steel is 55S7 and the blade is 23cm long... It's so light in the hand that it seems magical !!!

Hi Vince-Corto,
Are you looking for picture like this?

The CCC (Cutting Competition Chopper) by Jerry Lairson is truly cutting machine with GREAT heat-treat.

The third and the last one are made by Lairson.

This is the Sfreddo cutting camp knife:

Usualy 10" 52100 steel blade, integral bolster and very very confortable handle.

I have been fortunate enough to handle a damascus cutting comp knife from Kevin Cashen, possibly one of the sharpest knives I ever picked up! There's no doubt that these knives have an appeal and heritage all their own ..... great angle for a collection.
