Cutting Competition knives...

They're all superb !
What is the cutting competition knife just above the CCC from Jerry Lairson (with Kawasaki inscription on the handle ...) ?
Thanks in advance !
Vivien

Vivien,
The two knives above CCC are hand-maded by myself.
The first one is S30V stock-removal, heat-treated by Paul Bos.

The second one (big one) is hand-forged, steel is YK30 (O1-enhanced steel). This knife is the result I attened a knife making class held by a local maker who learned knifemaking in ABS school when he was in US.

By the way you can't tell from picture about the CCC, it has very special spine shape, the thickest area is not located near the handle but on the 1/3 area from tip. Check the attached picture for what I'm talking about.

Also there has one invisible "turing fork" in the handle to reduce the chopping shock. You can hear it when you hold the blade and "hit" the handle gently.

Here has a picture that Lairson sent it to my friend.

Joe Chen, i must say one thing : your work is truly beautifull !
In France, i would have say : Félicitations !!! (which means Congratulations...) :)
About your Lairson Cutting Competition knife : what kind of material is used for the handle ? My futur CCK (or CCC) will use Teak wood, which is quite original but Mr Lairson told me that it's for him as good as Desert Ironwood...
Anyway thanks a lot for your pictures : they're simply amazing and convince me that i've made a really, really good choice (and i must said that Mr Lairson is a very kind person : i really like to speak with him via email, he's a really nice knifemaker...)!:D

Vivien,
Thanks for your kind words. :)
The handle material of CCC is black micarta. You are right Lairson is a GREAT man to deal with and he is so humble and kind, his knife is truly cutting machine, you will be very happy to have his knife for sure.

Keith,
Just a hobby at my spare time (very little spare time). :)
Here has a link for some work I finished one or two years ago.
The page is in chinese but picture says thousand words.
I have some new finished knives, only pictures no web page.

I make knife for fun and gave what I made as gift to my local friends.

Sorry for off-topic.

Has much changed with knife design since this thread first appeared?

cool!

I love the Competition cutting style knives and what the makers work endures:thumbup:

I have this Jerry Lairson with Giraffe bone handle. Extremely comfortable;)

^^^ That is really sweet. This is a really old trhead, but if we get to see some more cool knives like this I have no complaints about knocking the dust off.

Yes, I think so. There are no more stabbing tests, so the latest designs are pretty much square-ended blades. The knives have evolved from their general purpose big camp knife origins to highly specialized designs specific to the demands of the current BladeSports rules.

I'm working on a knife right now which pretty much meets cutting comp spec;

since I'm building it from S30V using files, it might get finished sometime before the decade is done.

I have no intention to compete. Cutting comp spec is actually a pretty good guideline to follow in making a knife for this type of use.

Here are two pictures of Jerry putting his cutter through its paces at BLADE Show in Atlanta, 2004.

This was still an ABS phenomenon in '04. Mike Williams, left, was the mad scientist behind some of the most outrageous cutting scenarios undertaken in these memorable events. Lairson is chopping the 2X4 and Jerry Fisk, right, is cracking everyone up with his informative banter.

This is Jerry putting in one of the best efforts on a particular cutting challenge that was just impossible and also stoopid funny. They poured water on the smooth table surface, stuck the plunger down hard and timed how fast you cut through the handle without breaking the suction. If you look closely, you can see that he almost did it!

I subsequently bought this knife from Jerry at the AKA Little Rock Show and it's turned out to be among my personal favorites.

I don't think anyone could go wrong with a Lairson knife. Jerry's very accessible, does a lot of shows and, summing up, walks the walk.

Jerry and I competed in several competitions together, even since this thread was started. I actually used his knife in one competition. I had sold mine and did not have my latest finished, so he graciously shared. When he cut, he would hand me the knife and I would cut and hand it back to him. This was a "last man standing" competition, where you had to be successful at every cut or you're out of the competition. It got down to him and me. We were back and forth for quite a time, just us. I finally won with Jerry's knife. It was absolutely the most fun competition I have been in. Of course, Jerry was just as happy that I did it with his knife. Jerry makes a great knife. I know. Lin

Very interesting thread. I would like to build a knife that will meet the cutting comp specs. Very nice.
