Cutting heat-treated steel

Is there a way to cut heat treated steel that will guarantee (or at least make it very likely) that I won't ruin the heat treat? I have a large knife that I am looking to downsize a bit and I obviously do not want to ruin it by giving it a facelift.

You didn't sat how much is to be cut and where. Can't you just grind the material away? Frank

I've done it .Be patient, take your time . Cool often you shouldn't even get any heat color on the steel . Cut close with the cut=off wheel then complete with the grinder.

I basically want to shorten the knife, so it would be spine to edge--the width of the blade.
