Cutting in a plunge line

I only use that attachment on integrals, it's much too large of a radius for my regular plunges.

The tool rest argument is brought up a lot. I ground freehand for around 8 years. I was pretty confident in grinding just about anything, partly because I hollow ground daggers all the time.

Then I learned how to grind on a tool rest the way Tim Hancock does it. (the same way Mike Quesenberry is talking about). There's nothing restricting about it at all. The only thing I need to grind freehand that can't be ground on the rest is a scandi grind.

Not pointing fingers at anybody here, but I often hear the argument about freehand grinding when I'm at shows, and it's usually from guys that I don't think have that great of grinds.

I'm not sure where you choose to draw the line in this "cheating" argument. If you use a 2X72, but the next guys uses a file, does that make you a cheater??? LOL

For me, it's about making the best knife I can, and trying to enjoy it while I'm at it. :)

I dont use any rests or tables to grind. i do have a table rest i use to profile but thats it. I like to grind free hand because thats how i started and also just like it. I dont use any push sticks or gloves, i'm right in there with both hands guiding her all the way. I do think free grinding is an impresive skill. I met another knife maker on my trip to WA that grinds free hand edge down. man thats skills, i have to see the edge when i grind. It all comes down to making the best knife you can.
