Cutting primary angles in a cnc mill

Hey guys, just got my first blank cut out of 01 on my cnc this weekend and was curious if anyone has ventured to cut the primary angles (bevels) on a cnc before heat treat. I know that you do not want to cut to a fine edge before heat treating the blade. Was just looking to see if I could remove as much material as possible before removing the blade from the fixture. Thanks guys!

Yes, it is common practice.

I use air hardening steels and mill them down under .015" without problem, same as grinding.

Check out Aaron's thread. Fascinating stuff.

Also look up Grimsmo on youtube.

Although if Nathan wanted to start a youtube series on how he does it I know MANY of us would be fascinated to watch **hint hint**

I documented my process in a WIP thread a couple years ago :http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1048443-Advanced-Knife-Machining-WIP-Pointy-Fighter

A few details have changed over time, but that's fundamentally how I do it.

Nathan, watched your WIP... thank you.... that was awesome. Gave me a whole bunch of ideas!

Thanks guys, I'm glad you folks got some use out of it. WIP threads are a lot of work, I haven't done one in a long while.

I'd use a mill to rough bevels even if I didn't use CNC. In the grand scheme it might not be faster or cheaper or better, but it's a great way to get an edge centered and straight without a lot of mess, heat or drama. It's a less brute force and more cerebral approach to the craft, requiring more thought and less grunt. And chips rather than dust.
