Cutting Soda Cans

I will only use a Loveless to cut soda cans. I tried using a scagel, but I did not like it so I just threw it in the river. Maybe a nice moran might slice nicely through a can of mountain Dew:eek:   BUT WHY.......................ROTFLMAO

Leave them cans alone! Cans are... er... well a 'can do' lot! It's those PET bottles you should be after... all of those non-biodegradeable plastic gunk!

The 1.5 litre bottle are the best for slicing thru... go read BLADE for a lengthy discussion on physics and the dynamics of bottle slicing.

I buy water by the carton and now I have boxes of these bottles awaiting their DOOM!!

Waiting for a nice sunny day when I can fill them with water and then take them out onto my patio... THEN MY KHUKRI SHALL TASTE PLASTIC!!! MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!

I make the smaller 500ml bottles watch... hehehe... it'll be their turn soon enough! [cue: lightning] MWAHAHAHAHA!

MU-HWA HAHAHAHAHA!

:D

no no no... you're thinking of doggie bags. But once you put kittens inside and throw it away, it becomes kitty litter. Which sorta makes sense coz if the bag's big enough you can put a whole litter of kitties into it.

and now for something completely different:

PET stands for... poly-blahblah-ethyl-somethingorother-tee-blahblahblah. There. You got it? it's the bottles that hold your sodas and drinkling water that you buy at the store. They come in big 1.5L and 2L sizes (maybe bigger) and smaller bottles in the 500ml sizes too... and a whole lot of other sizes as well.

And they have screw on caps too. Though the bottles are ususally transparent, the caps have been known to come in several different colours. And I have discovered that the caps from different bottles are often interchangeable. Some brands of water come with spouts... you know the kind that you can pull with your teeth and then suck out of like you were a cyclist on the Tour de France.

Oh, and the bottles seem to be molded in different shapes too. Coke for instance has theirs molded in the curvaceous and very familiar coke bottle shape. Pepsi doesn't seem to have done much to theirs. Evian though has a whole mountain range running right around theirs.

And the labels on the bottles can vary as well. Most of them seem to be printed and the shrink wrapped onto the bottle. Others are just sticky plastic labels that tell you how much natural goodness your supposed to be getting and if you're not, then you're obviously too smart for them. I remove all the labels on my bottles. Especially the sticky ones.

Partly it's for the esthetics.... but partly it's for practical reasons; I think that if you slice a bottle through a sticky lable, you could leave streaks on the blade of you knife! That would be terrible and you'd have to start a new thread just to figure how to get it removed.

anyway... just to show that I'm not hijacking this 'can' thread and diverting it to 'plastic bottle land'... er... cans are made of metal... they're handy but I've never tried slicing one. I've stabbed many... and crushed even more. But, no... I've never sliced one. I cut some in half with some shears once but that was for a good cause.

Thank you very much and have a nice day.

The proper way to cut cans is not to use a knife, but just your hand. I saw a martial arts demonstration locally a few years ago and this was done. He even left the bottom half on the table, though it was a full can. Most impressive...

There are different type can cuts.
Full of water or empty. Course empty are harder to cut to leave the bottom on the table. One of the things we like to do in the cutting competetions is have them cut the can and then a paper cut of some type to check the edge.
We like to look for clean cuts and no tears in the can. If you wanted to you could beat the can in half with a dead chicken but a sharp knife will leave no wrinkles or tears.
Now we have discovered sitting the can upright on the table and cutting from top to bottom. If the edge is a bit too hard it will chip the edge on the rolled top of the can. We have had several guys that we have had to disqualify because of chipped edges yet if the knife is done right there is no damage. Paper cuts to follow. :)
I need to post in the custom section the results of the Batson symposium competetion we just finished up.
