Don't really need the hammer pole for anything so what would be involved in cutting it off? Could I do it with a hack saw and then blend it with a file or would the steel be too hard to cut through by hand? If I don't need it I figure I'd save some weight.

Nope, it's not through hardened, a hacksaw works just fine. I actually prefer them without the hammer head myself.

What's nearly perfect is the pipe hawk with the hammer head cut off. It leaves a nice, big square face to hammer with if you want, but is close to the eye, so it makes for a very accurate hit, and also if use on something soft. . .it won't bury itself, and you can go onto the next target without having to dig the head of of the, ummm. . .head.
