i want to cut ~1/16" to just under 1/8" ti sheet without real shop tools. is it possible?

(disclaimer: im afraid i havent searched the archives, as it appears that function is disabled)

with a dremel, im assuming a standard cut-off wheel will gum up immediately, and have no idea whether the actual dremel saw blades of various designs will cut Ti at all, or economically.

anybody know something that works?

i had tried a hacksaw on my last project but was getting shut down. i plan to invest in a better (high tension) hacksaw, and wonder what blades are recommended for ti sheet this thick?

many thanks-

Did you drill along the border before hacksawing. If not, try it. The closer the holes, the better.

I wouldn't try it with a Dremel. I burned out my last Dremel completely trying to bite off more than it could chew!:barf:

I noticed that they have a new (to me at least) metal cutting disk- might want to try that out a bit. I have spent dozens of hours cutting out blades with a dremel so I know the pain it brings.

You can cut ti that thick with a regular dremel cutoff wheel, it's how I was taught to cut locks in liners. The problem that you will run into is two-fold, one is that you need a way to keep the wheel at a constant angle or you'll break the fragile wheel, the other is that you will burn through many wheels, on a .080" liner, you could go through three or four wheels to cut a 2.5" lock, provided there was minimal breakage. That's how it works using a drill press anyhow, the higher speed of the dremel might make them last longer, but I think it would burn through them faster.

Are you cutting straight lines or shapes?? I had a piece of Ti that was 12" x 12" and I took it to a sheetmetal shop, they cut the whole thing on a shear into pieces 1" x 4" and only charged me $22.00, For The Whole Thing!!!! then it's quite easier to work with the smaller pieces... just my 2 cents...
