CV blade or SS blade for everday use in a Case knife.

I am looking to buy a Case Sod Buster JR and the Orange one with the SS blade caught my eye. On the other hand this knife will be an everyday use/hard use knife. So my question is would I be better off getting one with the CV blade and why? I appreciate any feedback.

I try to stay with CV primarily because I like a traditional to patina but there is nothing wrong with the Case SS and there are certainly more options available in SS.

That was the only reason I could think of for buying the CV, and if I get an SS I'm assuming it'll just get scratched up nice and good from everyday use. Are there any advantages or disadvantages to having either blade though?

Either will work. I carry both interchangeably. It's more of an aesthetic preference for many people - many here like to see the formation of a patina over time. There are small plusses and minuses for both in practical use. The biggest difference is that CV still will rust. Tru-Sharp won't (under normal conditions). You can overcome that with a little extra maintenance. CV is a little easier to sharpen, but I can get just as sharp an edge on SS as I can CV so again not a big issue.

I've been carrying Case SS knives more recently, but I carried CV knives much of last year and the first part of this year. It's just not that big of a deal to me one way or the other. I know how to maintain CV, and I know how to sharpen SS, so they become interchangeable. I will say, if you forget and leave one in your pocket and it goes though the wash, that SS comes out on top for that. :)

In short...
CV is overall a bit better in terms of use, but SS needs less maintenance.
As for the everyday use thing, we all give a different meaning to that expression.
If you don't mind a patina and keeping your blade clean, dry and oiled, then CV would probably suit you better.

I don't notice much of a difference in use or sharpening. If you prefer the orange color handle, get it.

Simply put, if you are poor with maintenance go with the SS, if you enjoy the ritual of wiping down your blades and tuning your edges than get the CV.

I carry both and I use the SS more with food although I generate my patina using food in the very beginning.

I read somewhere that a carbon steel blade holds an edge longer but I don't see how that can be according to what your saying.

Levine in his 2d edition quotes someone as saying that to prefer carbon to stainless knives these days is like preferring vacuum tubes to transistors. Pretty old quote, obviously.
I like carbon kitchen knives; they ring at my touch like stainless doesn't. But sentiment and aesthetics aside, there's no reason not to go stainless, and there's no better place for stainless than a sweaty pocket, IMHO.

They are very affordable knives. My advice, get the orange ss and a yellow cv and do your own use test. You can always gift one to a friend.

Well whats done is done I got the orange one with the SS blade. I already have 2 Case SS blades and they've served me beautifully. I suppose it won't hurt to get the CV blade as well though. Thanks for the advice though. Much appreciated.

I carry both. Stainless is harder and holds an edge longer. CV is easier to sharpen. CV will give you a metallic taste if you use it to cut an apple so stainless has the edge there. No pun intended.

Well, as inexpensive as the Sod Busters are, if you have any curiosity about Case's CV steel, they are as good a way to find out for yourself as any.

I recently got my first Case Sod Buster Jr, the Amber Bone with Tru-sharp Stainless. I liked it so much I have a Chestnut Bone CV model coming too. As I said, I like both.

Get both. You can tell by the feel when you sharpen them the stainless is harder. I don't sharpen my knives until they need it and CV lasts long enough for me. D2 is probably my favorite steel with CV coming in second. I don't know what grade of stainless Case uses. They call it surgical, but that could include 154 to 440. I haven't had enough experience carrying the different types of stainless to form an opinion other than I like it enough.

I love carbon blades but if you are going with a non-traditional colour like orange then I wouldn't sweat it and go with stainless if you like.

Not a bad comparison but maybe not quite comparable....ask any guitarist what they prefer and the overwhelming majority will say a vacuum tube amp over a solid state transistor amp almost every time. Vacuum tubes and carbon steel both have their appeal. I like modern stainless knives though but still don't want to play through a solid state amp.

I like both carbon and stainless. Never really been disappointed by decent examples of either. For a budget knife I like 1095, for my custom traditionals I really like 154cm.

35 year guitar player former touring musician here,

yes Sir,that is correct. Both SS and Vacuum Tubes have their place. Jazz/Blues and Rock etc Vacuum tubes is King. Metal/Rock Solid State is best for me.

I prefer Stainless blades but I also like my Carbon in some Knives. Both have their advantages and both are equally great. Its all preference.

I've learned a lot about amps.
