Got the prototype golok from David in the mail today. Drunk roommate decided to take another day off work so I went for a hike.

This one is 1/8" 1095, 18" OAL with 11 1/2" of edge. The handle is canarywood, cool stuff. This one is light and thin, only an inch wide at the handle.

The trail I chose is always crowded with sumac and these nasty thorn things. The thorny suckers are a bitch to cut. They are springy and like to come lashing back at you. I have never had any knife that can cut these effortlessly.

Being light and fast the golok did well.

Going up.

Looking into the flat abyss of eastern Colorado.

Saw this cool ass spider.

Tried to find some heavier stuff to chop. The little stuff was no challenge.

This old log was rotted...too easy.

Found something worth chopping. Hard as hell old fatwood. Hit this cross grain and the golok would bounce off. I harvested three branches. It was more like precision extraction than chopping, this stuff is half way to being petrified.

It burns good.

Stopped to take picture of bird.

Chopping this stuff was the real test. I wanted to see what the golok could do. It does a number on soft wood and brush....but it can do harder tasks if it has to. After this the edge was beat to crap. No dents, dings or chips but the shaving sharpness was gone. Still cuts paper well but it will need a touch up.

I thought you meant the rocks at first!:D
That fatwood looked about as hard though, nice review.

Nice Golok. Do you have a sheath for it?
-RB

Not yet. I slipped it in the stock sheath that came with my Blackjack Panga. It will do until I make one.

I might have had better luck with rocks. This stuff is about as dense as it gets.

Some how I knew you were the one that wood end up with that Golok.

Great pics man, I have never come across would like that, it does look petrified.

Soooo, I take it you likey.

I liked everything about that review!!! Great pictures, golok, landscape, and awesome fatwood score!

great pics! the foothills of the front range sure are pretty - those pics remind me of hiking above boulder which i guess is just north of you. nice fatwood score and a sweet blade too!

That thing is gorgeous. Every time I enter this forum, I see another knife I want.

I am jealous of your fatwood. I am jealous of your trails. I am jealous of your golok. I am even jealous of your spider!

:eek:AWESOME review bruce. I want one of those so bad. I will have one someday.:(

Bet your arms are tired all the choppin youve done lately.;)

Gorgeous pics. Im jealous of where you get to stomp around.:o

Just to show what a dork I am, the spider in the pic is a Phidippus johnsoni Redbacked Jumping Spider. Their bite is a little worse than a bee sting but much more interesting.

Lordy! Sexy, functional and being an FMA practitioner, it looks like it could also "feel alive" in the hand too!

Nice golok.
Man, you aren't kidding about those thorns. Don't know if it's the same species, but I have thorns like that all around my property. I call it "nature's concertina wire". You even look at it wrong and it cuts you. The thorns are so sharp you don't even feel the cuts, you just start bleeding. Makes a great natural fence, that and the saw palmettos.

Now that fatwood. Dang, looks like it already turned to amber!
