Well i was finishing up my Xmas knife exchange today and I epoxied everything together and then got ready to peen the tang but i could not get it to peen as it is forged S7 and i guess it does not like to be peened. so i ground it almost flush and zapped it with the welder real light and ground it off but now i got little air bubble pockets and I'm really pissed off as this has been a lot of work. any ideas on how to fix it.

Jarod,

If you can drill and tap the affected area, the just make a decorative something (pointy skull crusher, etc.) that will screw into the handle and cover this area.

 and all this time, I thought your knifemaking was flawless!

That's the plan, have everything as close to flawless as i can when it leaves the shop. It makes me maybe slower but i know i send out good work.

You could just pin a butt cap on the end, next time you must remember to heat up the end to soften it before assembly :-))

The little air bubbles are porosity in your weld. Grind it down a bit and reweld. You tried to weld to fast. If you are using a wire feed run it a bit to make sure your gas is at the nozzle, clip off the wire and then nail it. Guys leave a gas shielded wire gun lay around and then start it up welding and all the gas in the gun and the whip hose has mixed with atmosphere. If you were using stick you may have had to much arc gap or a bad angle. Good luck Jim

what kind of bubbles.. flux trapped in there.. could be a bad rod... or heat setting is too high.. ( not a welding expert, but had that problem in the past )

..... the s7 is an airhardening steel so that will be problematic.. .. i would have threaded the tang and turned up a threaded sleeve/pommel nut on the lathe to pull the handle in... ( but thats no good at the moment )

- it maybe a pita at the moment... if the arc weld has airhardened the end of the tang... you may have to take it all apart.. ( i don't know.. )

hopefully some others will come in with a good idea...

Another fix is to cut the tang back a 1/2 inch and weld a piece of allthread and then screw on a skullcrusher.

I tig weld and ya its fast as if i do it to long then the wood burns don't ask me how i know this ;). so maybe i will try and weld it again but just do little dots in the pockets and then cool it off after each little spot.
