Is it just good looking or does anyone have an equally good experience with this knive?

Hi Yonkyo and welcome to the forum!

I have the #1 and #3 Russell knives, I think they're great! I used the #3 when I was in the military, that is one tough friggin' knife. We called it a 'jump knife' as most of the guys in the Airborne Regiment carried them. Great for all general duties.

I got the #1 as a gift and take it camping all the time. Again, for general chores around the campsite, cutting meat/fish etc, it's perfect! I've never batoned it for wood (I carry a hatchet) so I don't know if it would work for that, but for all else it's great.
I have the stainless version and haven't had a problem, I've heard that some prefer the flat grind carbon version. Up to you!;)

Hope this helps some!

Cheers

Howdy Yonkyo, and welcome!

I have the flat-grind version of the #1 (also known as the Large Camper) and a flat-grind #4 Survival, both in 'high-carbon stainless.' The #1 is one of my most favorite knives. I find it extremely comfortable to use. As Rigson mentioned, it is a great knife for chores and small jobs around camp, cleaning game, whittling, etc. Personally, I wouldn't baton it to split kindling unless I absolutely had to. The flat-grind #1, although decently thick at the spine for a knife of its size, does seem less fragile than the saber-grind version.

I believe all of the Grohmann DH Russell knives are fantastic. I don't think you'd be disappointed with a #1 or any other knife from the line. At first i thought the shape of the #1 was a little odd, but once I had it in my hand, it really clicked and felt so right. I can't think of another knife in my collection that felt that great when I first handled it.

I picked up the folding version last summer at a local cutlery store. They had ordered it for someone who never returned to pick it up. It was marked down and since I had never seen anything like it before I couldn't resist.

I planned on using it during hunting season, but I only went out once and I never did use it. It's a very nice looking knife and for a lock-back it's very easy to open ( not nearly as much resistance as a Buck 110).

The most unique feature of the DH Russell knives is the handle shape. It seems that some people like it very much, and other people don't care for it at all. Me, I really like the unusual ergonomics and own a #1 and #2.

The #1 and #2 handles are smaller than other fixed blade knives. I suggest handling one if you can before purchasing. Also, if you have large hands, one of the larger models might be a better fit, like the #4 Camp Survival Knife.

Happy Shopping,
-Bob

I'd like to add that these are beautiful well-made knives. And if you buy Knives primarily for "lookin at" you won't be disappointed.
