D2 and BG-42 run - a promise?

Some time ago there was a discussion about a possible special run with the D2 blades - different models were sugessted. Sal has taken that seriously in consideration.
Earlier there was a promise (?) to produce some model in BG-42 steel (e.g. Lil' Temperance).
Although a new 'super' steel S30V is claimed to be the best compromise, many people consider and use D2 in small fixed knives. Also, following the long discussion on Chris Reeve's forum, it was not obvious that S30V were superior to BG-42.
What do you think about a limited run in some of these steels?
Sal?

Hi Franco.

We have demonstrated in the past that if we thought the market was there, we would try a run. About half the time it worked.

In the discussions that we've had in the past, there was not enough consensus to move forward.

Perhaps this thread might be such a vehicle.

Steel?

Model?

thanx for the input.

My thoughts:

1. Stick with a Golden-made model

2. Use one of the more popular platforms

3. Keep the same handle colour so it is interchangable as an SKU for the regular model for dealers, as needed

5. Keep the run small, 500 pcs or less

My suggestion:

1. BG-42 Dodo (whichever color is selling better)

My S30V Chinook II completely meets my needs, but I don't know how I could resist a BG-42 Chinook II made in Golden.
I wonder if I could afford it, though.
What would something like that cost?

By the way, I have two BG-42 knives: one made for me by Gene Osborn and featured in a six page article in Knives Illustrated; and another made by myself and heat-treated by Thomas Haslinger.
No other knife steel compares, in my mind, to BG-42 when it comes to combined keenness of edge, corrosion-resistance, and general toughness (VG-10 and D2 take a nice edge).
Combine that with the design of the Chinook II and one could take it anywhere and do anything with it.
How cool.
How expensive?

As I've probably mentioned once or twice (or twenty :) ) times, my BM 806D2 is about my favorite knife. However, since my Paramilitary came back from W/R, it has completely displaced the Benchmade for over a month. A Paramillie in D2 would be just about perfect (ain't nobody made a perfect one ;) )!

I'll second the D2 paramilitary I also really like the BM 806D2 but would like a smaller thiner alternative ;)

I've been thinking about this a bit and I figure there are a couple ways it could be gone about.

We could go crazy and do a discontinued model in either D2 or BG-42. I'd suggest BG-42 since I never see it around much anymore and it would be nice to actually get a chance to try the steel. A large amount of knives have D2.

But anyway, I'd suggest a Mini Dyad in BG-42. Eh? eh? Come on guys, Man, just thinking about that makes me feel all giddy. Maybe I'm the only one.

OR

We could go the more practical, less wild and crazy route. I'd love to see a Calypso Jr in D2 or BG-42. I know it has been brought back in gray already so this idea might not be practical, the Calypso market might already be saturated. But who here wouldn't kill, or at least slightly maim for a Calypso Jr in D2? I suggest D2 for this one since it is more well known and used than BG-42.

Another option would be another knife in D2. The Paramillie seems to be popular, I wouldn't have a problem with that, but I'd like to see the above ideas more.

Another factor, Spyderedge or Plain Edge on this sprint? Do you guys think half and half would be practical?

I agree with Carlos that it should be a rather small run and have the same handle color. Haha, but my exotic ideas kind of go against his other suggestions. Take care everyone.

I'd like a BG-42 Native or a polished D-2 Native. That model is cheap and affordable so it would be nice to have a few in different steels.

That seems so obvious now that Anthony has said it.
I'd go for that.

BG42 is still my favorite stainless steel.
VG10 is second.
S30V is third.

A full size Calypso with BG42 would be great. I'd love to compare my old VG10 Calypso against a BG42 model.

I'll buy any knife you make with BG42.

I'm with Chuck Bybee on steel choices, but my knife choices would be
1. Calypso Jr.
2. Native Chief
3. 3-D Native
4. G-10 Police
In actuality, I'd buy any of the knives I listed in any of the 3 steels mentioned.

I guess one of the problems is (for Spyderco anyway) that most Golden made knives come already with S30V, which is supposedly the wondersteel of our current time. If let's say Benchmade goes from 154CM to D2 that is a much greater incentive, then Spyderco going from S30V to D2 I think. IMHO I think it would make most sense to have a model with an "inferior" steel like ATS-55 being "diversified" to D2 or BG-42.

Having said that: I would love to see a Milli in D2!!! (and yes, I am aware that it comes in S30V :D)

Hmm, Calypso. Not Calypso Jr., there still seem to be plenty of those, but how about a full on Calypso in BG-42.

If a regular production model, then how about a BG-42 Native.

An Endura, Delica, Native, or all three, with thin G10 and either of these steels would be great. I'd buy one, if not all three models. I know we've had carbon fiber models of the Endura and Delica, but a G10 workhorse of any of these, something with a firmer looking design than FRN, would be, for me, a near perfect knife. FRN would work if it had an adjustable pivot. Putting a high-end steel into a non-adjusting pivot somewhat marginalizes the steel.

When topics like this come up, I think a semi-custom shop at Spyderco would be wonderful. Just imagine being able to order up any of the designs with hand-picked steel and handle materials. A longer wait and more money, to be sure, but the results would be worth it.
