D2 care question (Para Military)

Hi All,

Just pulled the trigger on a D2 Para Military, should have it by Friday :D

This will be an EDC for me, in pocket (potentially IWB). I live in New England (humidity in the summer, and sweat).

Since D2 is "almost stainless", is there anything special I will need to do to keep it from rusting? Do I need to dry it immediately when it gets wet? Do I need to keep it oiled (like the old carbon steel knives)?

The parts of the blade that I can see, I can keep tabs on. But I am concerned about the hidden parts (pivot and lock area). Do I need to periodically disassemble to inspect these areas?

What about edge corrosion essentially making the knife dull?

Anyone have problems they'd like to relate? Or anyone have a D2 para in adverse conditions with "no problems"?

I am really looking forward to carrying/using this knife, but I want to stay ahead of any issues that D2 might bring to the table.

Thanks,
Mike

ThumperACC,
FWIW I have had D2 steels for years. Old and new. Never had any problems with it at all. Normal care that you would give any good knife. Not all treat their knife the same so it will depend allot on how you treat yours. Do you get it wet and leave it off to the side for a few days? Cut acidic fruits and don't wipe it off for a long time? You will notice if you need to give it any special care, due to how you use it, in a short time. Its not fragile by any means. Great knife with great steel. Good luck with yours. I EDC between three knives. Para Military, Small Sebenza, Lone Wolf Diablo.

My only problem with my para in D2 is that finger prints are harder than average to remove it seems.

Cool

Never, but I could see getting it soaked and maybe failing to get all moisture out of the pivot area when I blow it out with compressed air. Then finding out later that my pivot is rusted. :(

Cut acidic fruits and don't wipe it off for a long time?
Again...never :)

Good to know and thanks.

By the way, nice clip and I am jealous of the tooling you have available to you to allow you to make such a clip. :D

Hi hwpaintballer,

Are they harder than average to remove because maybe the acids from skin are etching the blade or harder because of high polish and no matter how much you wipe, the oils just get pushed around and the smudge just won't leave the blade?

Thanks,
Mike

I treat mine like my 30V Military now that I know CPM D2 steel the way I do. No matter what steel I use if something high in acid sweat, lemon juice etc touches the blade it's going to get wipped down with an oily clean rag, other then that I want baby it.

I keep a silicone rag in my portable BOB at all times for the wipe downs of all my knives carried on any given day. As well as a loaded strop and a SharpMaker.

Smudges, I have went a week or two (:o) without cleaning my para and a tuf-cloth or a wet rag will getting looking new with a little bit of work.

rpttrsn,
Great clip. I've seen so many low-rider clips for the Para that look like they were made in grade 8 shop class. This one looks better than many factory clips. Do you take orders? Seriously.

OP,
Like everyone else I just clean mine when dirty, dry it when wet and wipe with oil once in awhile if I remember. No rust or corrosion. However, lately I have noticed a couple tiny patches of discolouration around the text near the tang. They are wiping off with no problems, though. I have no idea what it is or what's causing it. Maybe the warmer, more humid weather of late? But really, I don't even know if it is related to the steel or not. I'm not too concerned.

The D2 Paramilitary is still my favourite blade. All things considered (price being a biggie), it beats out my Ritter minigrip, BM 940 and even my Sebenza and Strider. If I could marry a knife...

If it gets stained you can just do this:

My CPM D2 Millie had a few grey streaks and stains from cutting fruit, meat, plants (rhubarb is evil;)) so I gave it a soak in some vinegar:D Cleaned it, stropped it and lubed it afterwards.

I must say I like it:thumbup:

Yo,

That's a bangin' clip bro. Does it use all three screws?

That's the best Para clip I've ever seen.

-
To the OP, I've not had any issues with the Spyderco CPM-D2 rusting and I've even carried a D2 Military or a D2 Para while I mow the lawn and been sweating like mad in 90 degree weather. Good stuff.

Left it un wiped on my para for the last few days... Fruits water.. glue...ETC No rust
Just fruit that taste like glue

Thanks, It works well. The larger is for the torx wrench to get to the third screw. The middle hole fits the torx for the pivot screw. The third hole is just for design. :D
