I don't know why polished cow bone isn't used more. Such a durable, attractive natural material, with a smooth tactile surface that feels great in the hand. What a handsome package, Gene. Congratulations on your evolving art.

Old-time Texas maker Clyde Fischer used smooth-polished cow bone more than any other handle material, because it was so durable, so ergonomic (although I never heard him use that word!:)), so reasonably priced, so readily available, and so handsome. He called it "Texas ivory".

Gene demonstrates why that's all still true today.

I can tell you have the same affection for bone as I do Will. I have walked many an old pasture to find weathered bone. The surface cracks don't effect strength, and it is truly beautiful when lightly stained and polished.
Thanks to all.

How weathered can the bone be before it is no good?

In early November I'll be hunting deer in Kentucky, on a beef farmer's property. I've seen at least a half dozen bone pile every year I've been down there but I never knew the stuff looked like that inside.

Although there are only a few of a cow's bone dense or thich walled enough for handles, those that are can be full of surface cracks and it not affect strength until the cracks are through and through... Even then superglue will strengthen enough for possible use. The attachment is an example of weathered cowbone.

Thanks for the congrats Will. I am really looking forward to the mail delivery this week.

Can pieces be found big enough to make grips for 1911 Commander sized grips? How do you stain it? I am getting a Star BM (Commander sized 9mm SA Auto) and I think cowbone would make attractive and unique grip panels.

Thanks,
Chris

I recieved my new knife today and the picture that you posted did not do the knife justice. It is much better looking when it is sitting in my hand. What particularly impressed me was the little details that were well thought out that other makers sometimes seem to forget. The sheath belt loop will accomodate a 2" belt. The thong is included on a knife with a thong hole. The little things are sometimes overlooked but Gene your attention to detail is superb.
Awesome knife Gene
:D
