I've been told that D2 can be 'etched' a dark gray with ferric chloride (Fe Cl3)

Does anyone have experience with this?
How is it done and does the finish last?

Mix 3 parts water to 1 part FeCl. Dip for a minute or so, neutralize with a 50/50 ammonia / water mixture then wipe away excess moisture using acetone. The longer you leave it in the FeCl mix, the deeper / darker the etch. I use this procedure with O-1 and let it etch for about 5 minutes. Gives me a nice dark black. Over time it will lighten with use, just redip to darken or touch up with a swab of the mix, neutralize and rub out with some 2000 grit to blend.
