D2 Griptilian, mistake?

Brand new to the hobby here. I just picked up the cabalas Griptilian D2 for 99. It seems to be great but did I make a mistake in not spending another 100 for the Freek with M4? I have read countless forums on both steels but also interested in the whole knife picture as well. Thank you

You made the right choice. I haven't been super impressed with Benchmade's M4 in comparison to the same offering from Spyderco. Anecdotal of course, but the M4 I've used from Benchmade just didn't seem to keep a keen edge as long.

With the price difference considered I think their D2 performs exceptionally well. I carried a 710 in D2 for a good while and would be lying if I said I noticed any real performance difference between it and Benchmade's M4.

for backup and learning to sharpen I picked up a CRKT moxie on clearance. For the price I’m not disappointed. I’m not even sure the freek would serve my needs better, zip ties here and there, things like that. I was really impressed with the look and feel of it more than anything, and it wasn’t much more than the 940 I went after, but ran across a decent deal on the Griptilian. To most I’m sure they will laugh, but it’s my first “high end” knife. I got so used to losing cheap Gerbers and other disposables so it’s satisfying to use quality at this point. Thanks for the perspective I failed to see.

You're welcome. I wouldn't laugh. I remember my first "high end" knife. It was 2004. I'd been in that same boat with "cheap Gerbers and other disposables". Then I got a new job that kept me working in an office all day. I needed something a little nicer, non-threatening, and still operable with one hand. So I went down to the local shop and had the owner bust out his print catalog. I settled on a fancy Blue Smoke Leek from Kershaw. I think it was eighty-something bucks. It sure looked cool but I was always worried about dinging up those scales.

These days, I cruise for sweet spots on the value curve. I've spent most of this year with a Civivi in my pocket. It's been good.

Don’t overthink your choice of steel
For EDC d2 is great and having some extra stain resistance is never bad

Benchmade knows about steels (as a lot of other main US brands) and you should be happy with the steel

as long as the ergos of the knife are good, just enjoy your knife

It all depends on use. The more destructive the use, the more you experience the differences in steels.
Only cut butter, and they’re all the same.

D2 is an excellent general purpose EDC steel. The Grip is an excellent knife.
Next question?
M4? Meh; not for twice the price.

I like and use both M4 and D2. As long as the heat treat is good, I think you'll be happy with either one. As many others have said, it boils down to price/performance.

I used a Dozier in D2 to do the equivalent of field dressing a domestic hog, it was no problem, and not much noticeable difference in sharpness when I got done.

I'd beat the shit out of a 200 dollar knife all day every day. They arent made to look at.

I like d2 to seemed to hold an edge well. Takes an edge easy on the work sharp. Drag that 200dollar knife through it ever few days maybe a week.

No experience with m4 but it's the steel in my pocket now.

I looooove s90.

What are we talking about. Lol
