Hello everyone,

Well after a few weeks of trying to break in my D2 Military (my first Military model) I am getting a little discouraged. It is still hard to open using the spyder hole, and there is no way flicking it open is even an option. Also when I use the spyder hole the liner barely makes a clicking noise and does not fully engage the tang. If I open it a little with the spyder hole then flick it open the rest of the way there is a very satisfying click and the liner engages the tang perfectly. I seem to remember reading about someone else having this problem but I can not find the thread. Do you think I should send it in or maybe it just needs a little more break in time?

My new Mili CF BG42 was a little on the stiff side, too, so I decided to disassemble it. It was easy enough. (And void the warranty, BTW.)

I cleaned the pivot aera (a bit locktite was between one washer and the blade) and polished it a little, and after putting the Mili back together, it was definitely smoother and flicking open was possible.

I hadn't any difficulties with the lock not engaging completely, though, so I'm not sure if reassembling the knife will help you with this problem. Besides, there's always the warranty issue.

Perhaps there's some dirt or something between the stop pin and the blade when opened (I know it's a new knife, but anyways). It would prevent the lock to engage completely when opened slowly and not so when flicked open... (?) just a thought, though.

Did you try to give the pivot aera a good soaking and cleaning with water and/or WD40? That might help....

P.S.: Take a look at this thread. Might be of some help.

I just picked up a D2 as well and compared to my smooth as silk Millie in S30V it does appear to be stiff. I have been working it whenever possible in hopes of breaking it in and it is getting better, but slooooow progress. My fingers are about worn out at this point. I'm going to give it more time before going to plan B, I found that I much prefer the older style jimping, other than that, pretty happy with it.

I posted a couple of months ago about a BG-42 Military I bought that was way too stiff and had to be way tight to center. The lock worked fine–sounded awesome, actually. I wound up sending it in to Spyderco. It's much better now, though it still needs to be pretty tight to center properly. It would be tough to flick, but I'm satisfied. It's not the easiest or smoothest opening knife I own, but I figure it's a fact of life with the tight lock bar.
